Armenia Seeks UN Support to Combat Disinformation and Hate Speech Amid Geopolitical Tensions

NEW YORK – Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Robert Abisoghomonyan met with UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications Melissa Fleming on Tuesday during the 80th session of the UN General Assembly to address the escalating issue of disinformation and hate speech in the current complex geopolitical landscape. The meeting highlighted Armenia’s concerns about the proliferation of false and harmful narratives, particularly within the context of heightened international tensions and the rapid evolution of digital communication channels.

Abisoghomonyan underscored the critical role of the international community, particularly the UN and its specialized agencies, in bolstering collaborative efforts to combat disinformation and promote digital resilience. He emphasized the need for enhanced media literacy and digital responsibility to counter the manipulative tactics employed in disseminating distorted information. The Deputy Foreign Minister also expressed Armenia’s willingness to actively participate in capacity-building initiatives and share its expertise in information technology and public communication to strengthen global efforts in this domain.

The discussions centered on the urgent need for a comprehensive international approach to address the multifaceted challenges posed by disinformation. Both parties acknowledged the detrimental impact of false narratives on societal cohesion, peace, and security, asserting the importance of fostering a global environment conducive to accurate and reliable information dissemination.

Abisoghomonyan highlighted the vulnerability of nations, particularly those facing complex geopolitical situations, to disinformation campaigns that exploit existing tensions and exacerbate conflicts. He stressed the imperative for international cooperation to counter these malicious attempts to destabilize nations and manipulate public opinion. The Deputy Foreign Minister further advocated for increased investment in media literacy programs to empower individuals with the critical thinking skills necessary to discern credible information from fabricated narratives.

The meeting between Abisoghomonyan and Fleming signifies a crucial step towards fostering a more robust international framework for combating disinformation. It reflects the growing recognition of the urgent need for a coordinated global response to address the pervasive and detrimental effects of disinformation on individuals, societies, and international relations.

Armenia’s proactive engagement with the UN on this critical issue demonstrates its commitment to collaborating with international partners to address the global scourge of disinformation and promote a more informed and resilient digital landscape. The meeting lays the groundwork for enhanced cooperation between Armenia and the UN in capacity-building initiatives and information sharing to counter the spread of disinformation and hate speech worldwide. Further discussions and actions are anticipated to emerge from this meeting, contributing to a stronger international response to the challenges posed by disinformation in the digital age.
