Kremlin Propaganda Machine Fuels Disinformation Campaign Targeting Ukrainian Mobilization Efforts
Amidst the ongoing conflict, the Russian propaganda apparatus has intensified its efforts to disseminate disinformation targeting Ukraine’s mobilization initiatives. This latest wave of false narratives primarily focuses on two key areas: the alleged mandatory mobilization of women and the purported lowering of the conscription age to 18. Further fueling the disinformation fire, Russian Telegram channels have circulated a deepfake video purportedly showing Olha Stefanishyna, Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, advocating for a travel ban on women aged 18 to 27. This fabricated video falsely claims that the Verkhovna Rada has endorsed this initiative. The CPD has identified this video as a deliberate attempt to manipulate public opinion and create further anxieties within Ukraine. In a separate incident, Russian disinformation campaigns targeted evacuation efforts in the Sumy region. A fabricated screenshot of a message purportedly from the head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration was circulated, falsely claiming an evacuation order. The CPD swiftly debunked this fake message, revealing the Russian intention to disrupt the evacuation process and leave civilians vulnerable to shelling.
The CPD continues to actively monitor and counter these disinformation campaigns, emphasizing the importance of critical information consumption.
