Cyabra Exposes Coordinated Disinformation Campaign Targeting Portugal’s General Election

A new investigation by Cyabra, a leading AI-powered disinformation detection platform, has uncovered a sophisticated online manipulation campaign aimed at influencing the outcome of Portugal’s recent general election. The report, titled "Fake Voices, Real Votes," reveals how networks of fake social media profiles and bots were deployed to sway public opinion and boost the far-right Chega party while simultaneously discrediting its rivals. Cyabra’s findings, which analyzed social media activity between April 14 and May 14, 2025, highlight the growing threat of disinformation and its potential to undermine democratic processes. The investigation has garnered significant attention, with CNN Portugal publishing a series of articles based on Cyabra’s findings, exposing the extent of the manipulation.

The investigation revealed that a staggering 58% of the accounts interacting with Chega’s official X (formerly Twitter) account were fake, artificially inflating the party’s apparent online support. Simultaneously, nearly half (49%) of the profiles commenting on posts from the Socialist (PS) and Social Democratic (PSD) parties were also identified as fake. These inauthentic accounts launched coordinated attacks against opposition leaders, spreading misinformation and promoting Chega within the same online discussions. The campaign employed a range of tactics, including amplifying false narratives, disseminating conspiracy theories, and fueling economic discontent and anti-immigration sentiment. The coordinated nature of these attacks was further evidenced by the fact that many fake accounts engaged in cross-campaign promotion – attacking rival parties while simultaneously praising Chega.

Cyabra’s CEO and Co-founder, Dan Brahmy, characterized the situation in Portugal as a "masterclass in modern influence operations." He emphasized the deliberate and strategic nature of the campaign, highlighting its potential to erode trust in democratic institutions and manipulate voter behavior during a critical election period. Brahmy commended CNN Portugal for bringing these threats to light, underscoring the importance of media vigilance in combating disinformation. This investigation exemplifies Cyabra’s ongoing global commitment to election integrity. In 2024, the company provided support to 19 democracies worldwide in their efforts to monitor and protect their elections from manipulation. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the increasing sophistication and pervasiveness of online disinformation campaigns, and the urgent need for robust detection and mitigation strategies.

The Portuguese election manipulation exemplifies a disturbing trend of online influence operations targeting democratic processes worldwide. These campaigns exploit the vulnerabilities of social media platforms, utilizing sophisticated networks of bots and fake accounts to spread disinformation, manipulate public opinion, and undermine trust in democratic institutions. The cross-campaign promotion observed in the Portuguese case, where fake accounts simultaneously attacked rival parties and promoted Chega, further highlights the coordinated and strategic nature of these efforts. The ability of these campaigns to manipulate public discourse and potentially influence electoral outcomes poses a serious threat to the integrity of democratic processes.

Cyabra’s investigation underscores the critical role of advanced AI-powered tools in detecting and countering these complex disinformation campaigns. Their ability to identify fake profiles, uncover harmful narratives, and track the spread of misinformation across various online platforms provides invaluable insights for safeguarding elections and protecting democratic institutions. The increasing prevalence of such campaigns necessitates ongoing vigilance and investment in disinformation detection and mitigation strategies.

Beyond the immediate impact on elections, the proliferation of disinformation has wider societal implications. The spread of false narratives, conspiracy theories, and divisive rhetoric can erode public trust, fuel social polarization, and undermine the very foundations of democratic discourse. Addressing this challenge requires a multi-faceted approach involving governments, social media platforms, civil society organizations, and individuals. It is essential to raise public awareness about the dangers of disinformation, promote media literacy, and develop effective strategies for identifying and countering malicious online campaigns. International cooperation and information sharing are also crucial in combating the transnational nature of these threats.

Cyabra Merges with Trailblazer Merger Corp. to Enhance Disinformation Detection Capabilities

In a strategic move to bolster its capabilities in combating online disinformation, Cyabra has entered into a business combination agreement with Trailblazer Merger Corp. (NASDAQ: TBMC), a special purpose acquisition company. This merger will provide Cyabra with additional resources and expertise to further develop its AI-powered platform and expand its reach in protecting corporations and governments from online threats. The combination of Cyabra’s cutting-edge technology and Trailblazer’s financial and strategic support is expected to accelerate the development and deployment of innovative solutions to address the growing challenge of online manipulation and disinformation.

This merger represents a significant step forward in the fight against disinformation, as it will enable Cyabra to scale its operations and deliver its critical services to a wider range of clients. The company’s platform, which leverages proprietary algorithms and natural language processing (NLP) solutions, provides real-time insights and alerts, enabling organizations to proactively address disinformation campaigns and protect their reputations and interests. The combined entity will be better positioned to invest in research and development, expand its team of experts, and enhance its platform’s capabilities in detecting and mitigating the evolving landscape of online threats. This strategic partnership will empower Cyabra to further its mission of uncovering the "good, bad, and fake" online, contributing to a safer and more transparent digital environment.

The merger is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals and shareholder approval. Further details regarding the transaction are outlined in the registration statement filed with the SEC. This merger is a significant development in the ongoing battle against online disinformation, and it holds promise for bolstering the defenses of democracies and organizations worldwide.
