Dhaka Hosts Crucial Dialogue on Youth Online Safety Amidst Growing Digital Threats
DHAKA – A critical roundtable discussion titled "National Dialogue on Youth and Online Safety" took center stage at the Platinum Grand of Banani in Dhaka on Thursday, co-hosted by the JAAGO Foundation and TikTok. The event, a component of the ongoing "Sabdhane Online A" campaign initiated in 2022, brought together a diverse assembly of stakeholders, including policymakers, tech industry leaders, journalists, academics, and youth representatives. Their shared mission: to dissect the current landscape of digital security in Bangladesh and chart a course towards a safer online experience for the nation’s youth.
The dialogue unfolded against a backdrop of escalating digital risks confronting young Bangladeshis. Experts at the roundtable highlighted the pervasive threats of cyberbullying, the insidious spread of misinformation, and growing concerns surrounding data privacy in the digital realm. These pressing issues underscored the need for proactive measures and collaborative efforts to fortify the online safety net for vulnerable users. The discussions emphasized not just the challenges but also the opportunities presented by the digital age, stressing the importance of equipping young people with the knowledge and skills to navigate the online world responsibly and safely.
Professor Shamim Al Mamun, from the Institute of Information Technology at Jahangirnagar University, underscored the burgeoning significance of digital safety in Bangladesh, noting that the rapid expansion of online platforms presents a double-edged sword. While these platforms open up new avenues for learning, communication, and personal development, they simultaneously expose users to an array of cyber threats. Professor Mamun emphasized the urgent need to integrate online safety education into academic curricula, preparing the next generation to confidently and securely navigate the digital landscape. He stressed that equipping students with the tools to identify and respond to cyber threats is no longer optional but an essential component of modern education.
Tanvir Chowdhury, project manager of the “Sabdhane Online A” campaign at the JAAGO Foundation, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the collective responsibility to ensure the online safety and digital well-being of young people. He called for sustained and concerted efforts to empower the youth to become responsible digital citizens, capable of navigating the online world with awareness, critical thinking, and resilience. Chowdhury’s remarks highlighted the ongoing commitment of the JAAGO Foundation to fostering a safer online environment for young Bangladeshis.
The roundtable discussion delved into a comprehensive range of topics, exploring the specific challenges and opportunities within the Bangladeshi digital context. Participants analyzed the evolving nature of cyber threats, discussed effective strategies for countering misinformation, and explored innovative approaches to enhancing data privacy protections for young users. The discussions also underscored the importance of collaboration between government agencies, private sector organizations, and civil society groups in creating a safer digital ecosystem.
The “National Dialogue on Youth and Online Safety” served as a vital platform for sharing expertise, generating actionable recommendations, and galvanizing collective action towards a more secure digital future for Bangladesh. The insights and recommendations generated from this dialogue will inform future initiatives and policies aimed at strengthening online safety measures and empowering young people to thrive in the digital age.
