Combating Wildfire Misinformation with Kindness: The BC Wildfire Service’s Innovative Social Media Strategy

The digital age has amplified the speed and reach of information dissemination, but it has also facilitated the spread of misinformation, particularly regarding critical events like wildfires. In British Columbia, the BC Wildfire Service is tackling this challenge head-on with a novel approach: kindness. Recognizing the prevalence of incorrect information circulating on social media platforms, the agency has adopted a playful, gentle tone in its online interactions, aiming to educate the public with facts and dispel rumors with empathy. This shift in communication strategy, incorporating emojis and a more approachable language, has proven remarkably effective in engaging the public and correcting misconceptions about wildfires.

The term "human-caused," frequently used by wildfire agencies, has often been misconstrued as arson by the public. The BC Wildfire Service’s social media team actively monitors comment threads, addressing such misinformation with clarifying explanations and helpful resources. This proactive engagement not only corrects inaccuracies but also provides valuable information to a wider audience who may have similar questions. By fostering a positive and informative online environment, the agency aims to increase public understanding of wildfire science and response, ultimately empowering communities to better adapt to the increasing threat of wildfires.

This approach, which gained traction during the 2024 wildfire season, is a direct response to the often-sarcastic tone adopted by users on platforms like Facebook. Jean Strong, a digital communications officer with the BC Wildfire Service, explains that even sarcastic comments are addressed with kindness, ensuring that accurate information reaches a broader audience. This strategy acknowledges the anxiety and fear surrounding wildfires, recognizing that providing factual information in an accessible and engaging manner can help alleviate public concerns.

The BC Wildfire Service’s commitment to enhancing public understanding extends beyond social media interactions. Recognizing the need to reach diverse audiences, the agency has invested in creating an in-house video team and collaborated with documentary filmmakers to produce a wildfire series. This multimedia approach allows them to connect with younger demographics on platforms like Instagram, expanding their reach and educational impact. The shift towards a lighter, more engaging communication style has not always been readily accepted internally. However, the demonstrable positive results have gradually persuaded colleagues of its effectiveness, especially in reaching skeptical audiences. Research indicates that a less authoritative, more human tone, particularly incorporating humor, can effectively bridge communication barriers and foster engagement with scientific topics.

Strong emphasizes the importance of using appropriate language and terminology to dispel fear and anxiety. For instance, clarifying the meaning of "out of control" in wildfire contexts helps prevent unnecessary panic. While the term may evoke images of chaotic, uncontrollable infernos, it simply refers to a fire’s anticipated growth based on prevailing conditions, not necessarily its immediate danger level. This focus on clear, concise language helps the public interpret information accurately and reduces the spread of misinformation.

The BC Wildfire Service recognizes that a lighthearted approach may not always be suitable, especially when dealing with serious emergencies. However, incorporating humor and genuine human interaction when appropriate has proven to be a valuable tool in engaging with the public. Strong highlights that social media engagement, whether serious or lighthearted, ultimately aims to educate. Moreover, she emphasizes that the online environment directly impacts the firefighters on the front lines, who often monitor social media after a long day’s work. Positive feedback and expressions of appreciation can significantly boost their morale, counteracting the negativity that can sometimes pervade online discussions. Therefore, the agency encourages the public to contribute positive messages, fostering a supportive online community that recognizes the dedication and hard work of the firefighters.
