TADAM Webinar Series Concludes with Deep Dive into AI, Disinformation, and the Future of Journalism

The final session of the Training Against Disinformation and Misinformation (TADAM) webinar series, held on June 26th, culminated in a focused exploration of the complex interplay between artificial intelligence (AI) and disinformation, particularly within the context of modern journalism. The session, titled "Disinformation and AI: Towards Media Edukathon," provided a dynamic platform for participants to engage directly with the opportunities and challenges presented by AI’s growing influence on the media landscape. Through hands-on testing of AI tools and a robust panel discussion featuring leading experts in journalism, media literacy, and technology ethics, the event fostered critical thinking, practical skill development, and the exchange of invaluable insights. This concluding session served as a call to action, emphasizing the urgent need for ethical guidelines, transparent practices, and ongoing education to responsibly navigate the evolving digital information environment.

The heart of the session involved interactive group activities centered around testing various AI tools currently being employed in journalistic practices. Participants had the opportunity to explore the functionalities and limitations of AI applications across different media formats, including text generation, audio editing, visual manipulation, and audiovisual content creation. This practical exploration provided a tangible understanding of how AI can augment journalistic processes, while also highlighting potential pitfalls related to accuracy, bias, and the potential for misuse in spreading disinformation. The hands-on experience allowed participants to develop a more nuanced perspective on the ethical considerations surrounding the use of AI in news production and dissemination.

The event also featured a compelling panel discussion bringing together a diverse range of perspectives on the challenges and opportunities presented by AI in journalism. Jon Schleuss, President of NewsGuild, USA and IFJ member, emphasized the need for ethical frameworks governing AI applications in journalism, suggesting a focus on aligning AI practices with the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) code of ethics. Mihajlo Lahtov, a Media and Information Literacy Specialist from North Macedonia, underscored the importance of equipping citizens with the critical thinking skills necessary to discern credible information from AI-generated content and manipulated media. Katerina Topalova, a journalist at MRTV, North Macedonia, shared practical insights from the field, highlighting both the potential benefits and the inherent risks associated with integrating AI into journalistic workflows. Maarit Jaakkola, Co-Director of Nordicom, Sweden, contributed a broader perspective on the evolving media landscape, emphasizing the role of research and education in fostering responsible AI adoption within the journalistic community.

The panelists engaged in a lively discussion around the dual nature of AI’s impact on journalism. While acknowledging the potential for AI to enhance efficiency, automate tasks, and drive innovation, they also expressed concerns about the potential for misuse in generating and disseminating disinformation, perpetuating algorithmic bias, and eroding public trust in media institutions. The discussion underscored the urgent need for establishing clear ethical standards, promoting transparency in AI-driven content creation, and investing in continuous education and training for journalists to adapt to this rapidly evolving landscape. The experts agreed that a multi-pronged approach, involving collaboration between journalists, technology developers, media literacy educators, and policymakers, is crucial for harnessing the potential of AI while mitigating its risks.

The session’s key takeaway was the recognition of the transformative power of AI in reshaping the future of journalism. The call for ethical guidelines, specifically aligning with the IFJ code of ethics, was a central theme. This code emphasizes the importance of accuracy, fairness, independence, and accountability in journalistic practices. The integration of AI tools into these practices requires a careful consideration of these core principles to ensure the responsible and ethical use of these technologies. The discussion also highlighted the need for increased media literacy among both journalists and the public to effectively navigate the increasingly complex information environment, where AI-generated content can easily blur the lines between authentic reporting and fabricated narratives.

The concluding TADAM webinar session provided a valuable platform for addressing the complex challenges and opportunities presented by AI in the field of journalism. The interactive format, encompassing hands-on testing of AI tools and a dynamic panel discussion, fostered a deeper understanding of the ethical considerations surrounding this rapidly evolving technology. The insights shared by leading experts, combined with the practical experiences of the participants, contributed to a comprehensive exploration of how the journalistic community can navigate the complexities of AI while upholding the core principles of accuracy, fairness, and public trust. The call for ethical guidelines, transparent practices, and ongoing education will be instrumental in shaping a future where AI can be leveraged responsibly to enhance journalistic endeavors while mitigating the risks of disinformation and manipulation. The event served as a significant step toward building a more resilient and informed media landscape in the face of the challenges posed by the digital age.
