ERIM Launches Grant Initiative to Bolster Independent Media and Combat Disinformation in Moldova’s Electoral Landscape

CHISINAU, Moldova – The Equal Rights and Independent Media (ERIM), a France-based international non-governmental organization, has announced a significant grant opportunity for independent media actors and civil society organizations in Moldova. This initiative aims to fortify their capacity to counter disinformation and hate speech, ultimately bolstering public trust in the electoral process. This call for applications is part of the broader “ProElect – Promote accountability in Electoral processes in EaP through increased participation and capacity of civic actors” project. Funded by the European Union and spearheaded by the Transatlantic Foundation in partnership with ERIM, ProElect seeks to empower civil society in the Eastern Neighborhood to actively engage in election monitoring and the promotion of democratic accountability.

The grants will empower Moldovan organizations to implement a wide array of activities designed to tackle disinformation and promote electoral integrity. These activities include media monitoring initiatives to track and analyze the spread of false information, research projects combined with advocacy efforts to inform policy and public discourse, and public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about the dangers of disinformation and the importance of critical media literacy. Furthermore, grants can support social media campaigns to counteract online manipulation, training programs for journalists, activists, public institutions, and security experts to enhance their capacity to identify and address disinformation, and roundtable discussions and public forums to foster dialogue and promote transparency in the electoral process.

In addition to these core activities, the grants can fund innovative approaches to combatting disinformation, such as the development of fact-checking applications and AI-powered tools to automate the identification and debunking of false narratives. Support can also be extended to the creation of real-time reporting mechanisms to provide rapid responses to disinformation campaigns, as well as cultural projects that leverage artistic expression to promote critical thinking and media literacy. The inclusion of such diverse activities demonstrates ERIM’s commitment to a multi-faceted approach to addressing the complex challenge of disinformation in Moldova’s electoral landscape.

The grants offered by ERIM are substantial, with project grants for countering disinformation reaching up to €25,000. Recognizing that capacity building is crucial for sustained impact, an additional budget of up to €7,000 is available specifically for activities focused on strengthening the skills and resources of recipient organizations. This dual funding approach underscores ERIM’s understanding that effectively countering disinformation requires both immediate action and long-term investment in the development of independent media and civil society.

This initiative comes at a crucial time for Moldova, as it navigates the challenges of disinformation and external interference in its democratic processes. By empowering independent media and civil society organizations, ERIM and its partners are contributing to the strengthening of Moldova’s resilience against these threats and promoting a more informed and engaged citizenry. The availability of these grants provides a unique opportunity for Moldovan organizations to contribute meaningfully to the integrity of their country’s electoral process.

Interested independent media actors and civil society organizations in Moldova are encouraged to submit their applications by the deadline of March 24. This initiative represents a significant investment in the future of Moldova’s democratic landscape, and the participation of local organizations is essential for its success. The combined resources and expertise of ERIM, the Transatlantic Foundation, and the European Union, channeled through these grants, offer a powerful platform for positive change in Moldova’s media environment and electoral integrity.
