Navigating the Maze of Misinformation: Expert to Deliver Free Lecture on Disinformation in Canada

In an era saturated with information, discerning truth from falsehood has become a critical skill. The Sunshine Coast ElderCollege is hosting a timely and essential lecture, “Disinformation in Canada,” to equip individuals with the tools to navigate the complex landscape of online and media information. The free event, open to all ages, will be held on September 13th, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Raven’s Cry Theatre. This year’s lecture is generously sponsored by the Sunshine Coast Credit Union.

Leading the discussion is Dr. Ahmed Al-Rawi, Associate Professor of News, Social Media, and Public Communication, and Director of the Disinformation Project at Simon Fraser University’s School of Communication. Dr. Al-Rawi brings a wealth of expertise in identifying and combatting the spread of misinformation and disinformation, making him an ideal guide for attendees seeking to develop critical thinking skills in the digital age.

The lecture will delve into the pervasive issue of misinformation and disinformation, exploring its impact on individuals and society. Dr. Al-Rawi will draw on both Canadian and international examples to illustrate the various forms that false information can take, and how it can be disseminated through various channels. He will address the challenges individuals face in identifying false narratives, and provide practical strategies for verifying information and protecting oneself from manipulation.

The Disinformation Project, under Dr. Al-Rawi’s direction, tackles complex and controversial issues that have the potential to influence public opinion, political discourse, and even private lives. The project’s work underscores the urgent need for critical media literacy and highlights the importance of fostering informed and engaged citizenry.

This free lecture offers a valuable opportunity for community members of all ages to learn from a leading expert in the field. Attendees will gain valuable insights into the mechanisms and impact of disinformation, and acquire practical skills to navigate the information landscape effectively. The lecture promises to be an engaging and informative session, empowering individuals to become more discerning consumers of information.

While the lecture is free of charge, pre-registration is required. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to register online through the Sunshine Coast ElderCollege website: sunshinecoasteldercollege.ca. Seating may be limited, so early registration is recommended to secure a spot at this important event.

The rise of disinformation poses a significant challenge to democratic societies, undermining trust in institutions and jeopardizing informed decision-making. By providing access to expert knowledge and practical strategies, the Sunshine Coast ElderCollege is playing a vital role in equipping individuals with the tools they need to navigate the complexities of the digital age and contribute to a more informed and resilient community. The “Disinformation in Canada” lecture serves as a crucial step in building a more media-literate population capable of resisting the spread of false information and engaging in constructive dialogue.
