Rafale Under Fire: Disinformation Campaign Targets India’s Fighter Jet

New Delhi – A sophisticated disinformation campaign targeting the Rafale fighter jet has been uncovered, with actors linked to China and Pakistan actively working to undermine the aircraft’s reputation and sow discord between India and France. This revelation comes from French sources who spoke exclusively to ET, revealing a concerted effort to spread false narratives and manipulate public opinion about the Rafale’s performance. The campaign intensified following India’s retaliatory strikes against terrorist camps in Pakistan, during which Rafale jets played a crucial role, deploying SCALP missiles. This disinformation campaign aims to damage the Rafale’s image, promote competing aircraft like the Chinese J-10, and ultimately strain the strategic partnership between India and France.

The disinformation campaign employs a multi-pronged approach, utilizing fabricated news stories, manipulated videos, and flawed technical analyses disseminated across various platforms. Chinese social media actors, including those on platforms like TikTok, play a key role in amplifying these false narratives. One prominent example involves the spread of a fabricated story claiming that Indonesia was reconsidering its plans to acquire Rafale jets due to the aircraft’s alleged poor performance in the Indian operations. This claim was swiftly debunked when France and Indonesia signed a Letter of Intent for additional Rafale jets, building upon an existing order from 2022. This incident highlights the deliberate and coordinated nature of the disinformation campaign.

A central theme of the disinformation campaign revolves around the false claim that three Rafale jets were shot down during the Indian operations. This fabricated narrative aims to portray the Rafale as ineffective and vulnerable. Furthermore, the campaign propagates the misconception that the Rafale jets were grounded after the initial phase of the operation, further attempting to discredit their operational capabilities. These claims have been categorically refuted by Indian government sources, who confirmed that the strikes on May 7 involved a mix of fighter aircraft, including the Rafale, and all designated targets were successfully engaged. These targets included heavily fortified terrorist headquarters in Muridke and Bahawalpur.

Indian government sources further clarified that Rafale jets played an extensive role in subsequent strikes on Pakistani airbases on the night of May 9-10, targeting high-value assets deep within Pakistani territory. Addressing the issue of Indian losses in the initial strikes, the sources referred to statements by the Chief of Defence Staff, who acknowledged tactical errors but emphasized that lessons were learned and applied to effectively execute the subsequent strikes against Pakistan. This transparency from Indian officials further undermines the credibility of the disinformation campaign.

The reach of this disinformation campaign extends beyond regional platforms, infiltrating Western social media as well. A fabricated claim originating on a Chinese blogging platform on May 7 alleged that France had requested India to cease using the Rafale in operations. This false information quickly migrated to Western platforms like X (formerly Twitter), gaining significant traction and further muddying the waters surrounding the Rafale’s capabilities and role in the Indian operations. This cross-platform dissemination underscores the sophisticated and coordinated nature of the campaign.

The disinformation campaign targeting the Rafale underscores the increasing use of misinformation as a tool in geopolitical rivalries. The coordinated effort by actors linked to China and Pakistan demonstrates a clear intent to undermine India’s defense capabilities, damage its strategic partnerships, and promote their own defense industries. The campaign’s reliance on fabricated stories, manipulated videos, and flawed analyses highlights the need for critical evaluation of information circulating online. The swift debunking of the Indonesia claim serves as a reminder of the importance of verifying information from reliable sources. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges posed by disinformation in the modern information landscape and the crucial role of independent journalism in uncovering and exposing such campaigns.
