India Cracks Down on Pro-Pakistan Disinformation Campaign Following Cross-Border Strikes

New Delhi – The Indian government has launched a nationwide crackdown on anti-national propaganda and fake news disseminated by pro-Pakistan social media accounts. This decisive action follows a surge of misinformation following India’s "Operation Sindoor," a series of cross-border strikes targeting terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has directed all state governments to take immediate action against the spread of false information and block accounts linked to the Pakistani establishment, both domestic and foreign.

The disinformation campaign, orchestrated in the wake of Operation Sindoor, has seen a deluge of false narratives emerge from Pakistani social media handles. These accounts have propagated fabricated stories about downed Indian fighter jets, bombed Indian air bases, and captured Indian soldiers. These claims, often accompanied by manipulated images and videos, aim to undermine India’s military operation and sow discord within the country. The Indian government has recognized the gravity of this situation and has invoked Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, to block online content that poses a threat to national security or public order.

Operation Sindoor, a joint operation by the Indian Army and Air Force, was launched in retaliation to the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 26 individuals. The operation targeted nine terror camps in Pakistan and PoK, aiming to dismantle the infrastructure of terrorist organizations such as Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen. The Indian government has reported that over 90 terrorists were eliminated in these strikes.

Pakistan, in response to the operation, has vehemently condemned it as an "act of war" and has ramped up its disinformation campaign. Among the false claims circulating online are reports of Indian Rafale aircraft being shot down near Bahawalpur, accompanied by an image from an unrelated incident in 2021. Pakistan’s Defence Minister, Khawaja Asif, also falsely asserted that Indian soldiers had been captured, a claim he later retracted.

The MHA, recognizing the critical need to counter this misinformation, has emphasized close coordination between local and federal governments, as well as the armed forces. This collaborative approach seeks to ensure a swift and unified response to the evolving disinformation landscape. Furthermore, the government is focusing on strengthening communication links, particularly in vulnerable regions, to prevent the spread of false narratives and maintain public order. This enhanced communication network will play a vital role in disseminating accurate information and countering the malicious propaganda emanating from Pakistan.

The proliferation of fake news and propaganda poses a significant threat to national security, potentially inciting unrest and undermining public trust. The Indian government’s proactive measures to combat this disinformation campaign demonstrate its commitment to upholding national security and maintaining public order. The ongoing crackdown on pro-Pakistan social media handles underscores the government’s resolve to counter the spread of false information and hold accountable those responsible for disseminating it. This resolute action aims to ensure the integrity of information and protect the nation from the destabilizing effects of malicious propaganda.
