DUCSU Election Commissioner Denounces Spread of Misinformation, Lauds Successful Polls

DHAKA – In the wake of the recently concluded Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) and Hall Union elections, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Professor Mohammad Jahsim Uddin has issued a statement denouncing the circulation of misinformation surrounding the polls. He expressed concern over attempts by certain online activists and social media groups to mislead the public and students with fabricated information regarding the electoral process. The CEC emphasized the importance of relying on verified sources and cautioned against the detrimental effects of spreading unconfirmed claims, particularly on the university’s reputation.

The DUCSU and Hall Union elections, held on September 9, 2025, were widely lauded as a successful exercise in democratic practice. Professor Uddin, in a press release, expressed his gratitude to all stakeholders for their contribution to the smooth execution of the elections. He highlighted the positive atmosphere that prevailed during the polls, describing them as joyful, fair, and enthusiastic. The elections have been recognized as a significant achievement in the country’s electoral history, garnering praise for their transparency and credibility.

Despite the overall success, the Election Commission received complaints regarding a few isolated incidents. Professor Uddin assured the public that these incidents were minor in nature and were addressed promptly. He reiterated that, barring these isolated occurrences, the elections were conducted in a free, fair, and participatory manner, ensuring a level playing field for all contestants.

The CEC’s statement strongly condemned the spread of misinformation, emphasizing its potential to tarnish the university’s image. He called on all individuals to exercise caution and refrain from sharing unverified information. Professor Uddin stressed that the integrity of the electoral process must be protected from malicious attempts to undermine public trust. He encouraged reliance on official sources and verified claims to prevent the further dissemination of false narratives.

The successful conduct of the DUCSU and Hall Union elections marks a significant milestone for Dhaka University. The polls, held after a considerable hiatus, represent a renewed commitment to student representation and democratic governance within the university. The high voter turnout and the peaceful atmosphere witnessed during the elections demonstrate the student body’s enthusiasm for participating in the democratic process.

The CEC’s statement serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible information sharing, especially in the context of elections. The spread of misinformation can have serious consequences, eroding public trust and potentially influencing electoral outcomes. It is crucial for individuals to critically evaluate information before disseminating it, relying on credible sources and official pronouncements. The success of the DUCSU elections should be celebrated as a triumph of democratic values, and efforts must be made to protect this achievement from attempts to discredit it through misinformation.
