Atlanta CDC Shooting Sparks Outrage and Demands for Action Against Vaccine Misinformation

A deadly shooting at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) headquarters in Atlanta has ignited a firestorm of condemnation against the rampant spread of vaccine misinformation, with a union representing CDC employees demanding that the federal government take a decisive stand against the dangerous rhetoric. The incident, which left a police officer dead and the suspected shooter deceased, has shaken the scientific community and underscored the real-world consequences of false narratives surrounding vaccines.

On Friday, a 30-year-old man, identified as Patrick Joseph White, opened fire at the CDC campus, tragically killing DeKalb County police officer David Rose, a 33-year-old former US Marine and recent police academy graduate. White, armed with five guns including at least one long gun, reportedly hit at least four CDC buildings before being found dead on the second floor of a building across the street. Authorities are investigating whether his death was self-inflicted or the result of police gunfire. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation described the crime scene as “complex” and anticipates an extended investigation.

The attack has been directly linked to the pervasive misinformation surrounding vaccines, particularly against the COVID-19 vaccine. White, reportedly distraught over the death of his dog and fixated on the COVID-19 vaccine, blamed the vaccine for his depression and suicidal thoughts, according to a law enforcement official speaking anonymously to the Associated Press. This tragic incident underscores the devastating impact of misinformation, which can fuel distrust in science and incite violence.

The American Federation of Government Employees, Local 2883, the union representing CDC workers, has issued a strong condemnation of the violence, characterizing it as a direct consequence of “months of mistreatment, neglect, and vilification” endured by CDC staff. The union has explicitly called upon CDC Director Susan Monarez and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHH), currently led by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a known vaccine safety skeptic, to publicly denounce vaccine disinformation. They argue that such a clear statement from federal officials is essential to restore public trust in science and safeguard scientists from further violence.

The union’s demands extend beyond a simple condemnation of misinformation. They are calling for increased security measures on all CDC campuses, including perimeter security until the investigation concludes, and emphasizing the need for a trauma-informed approach to the return to work for affected staff. The union has stressed that employees should not be forced to work in the presence of bullet holes and other reminders of the traumatic event, advocating for necessary repairs and security enhancements before staff are required to return. The incident also highlighted the vulnerability of the CDC community, with more than 90 children locked down in the CDC’s Clifton School during the attack.

This incident has brought to light the simmering tensions and anxieties within the CDC, exacerbated by the spread of misinformation and the perceived lack of support from leadership. Fired But Fighting, a group of laid-off CDC employees, has directly accused Kennedy Jr. of fueling a climate of hostility and mistrust through his public pronouncements on vaccines. While Kennedy Jr. expressed condolences and stated that “no one should face violence while working to protect the health of others,” the union and others maintain that his rhetoric has contributed to the dangerous environment surrounding public health officials and scientists. The attack serves as a stark reminder of the real-world consequences of misinformation and the urgent need for responsible communication and leadership in addressing this critical issue.
