B.C. Human Rights Commissioner Launches Campaign to Combat Misinformation and Disinformation

VANCOUVER – British Columbia’s Human Rights Commissioner, Kasari Govender, has launched a province-wide campaign to address the escalating threats of misinformation and disinformation to human rights. The campaign, unveiled Saturday in downtown Vancouver, aims to equip British Columbians with the necessary tools and understanding to identify and counter the spread of false or misleading information. Govender’s office emphasizes that misinformation, defined as false information shared unintentionally, and disinformation, false information deliberately spread to deceive, have become pervasive issues in the province, contributing to a rise in hate both online and in physical spaces.

The campaign features a multi-pronged approach, including an interactive online quiz designed to test individuals’ ability to discern credible information from falsehoods. A prominent physical installation, a nine-foot-tall interactive cellphone, has also been erected in Vancouver’s Library Square and will remain on display until September 15th. This striking visual component serves as a focal point for the campaign, drawing attention to the pervasiveness of misinformation in the digital age. The interactive cellphone installation is scheduled to tour several other B.C. communities, including Kelowna, Prince Rupert, Smithers, and Victoria, extending the campaign’s reach throughout the province.

Govender stresses the urgent need for this initiative, citing the detrimental impact of misinformation and disinformation on social cohesion and human rights. Her office highlights the alarming trend of conspiracy theories and false narratives targeting specific communities, such as those that scapegoated Asian communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. These harmful falsehoods fuel discrimination, prejudice, and hate incidents, underscoring the crucial link between misinformation and the erosion of human rights. The Commissioner’s office emphasizes that addressing this challenge requires a collective effort, empowering individuals to critically evaluate information and become responsible consumers of news and online content.

Beyond the online quiz and interactive installation, the campaign also encourages active participation from various community groups. Educational resources and support are being offered to classrooms, youth groups, and community organizations to facilitate engagement with the campaign’s core message. This includes funding opportunities for visual and multi-art projects that creatively explore the themes of misinformation, disinformation, and their impact on human rights. By fostering community involvement, the campaign seeks to cultivate a broader understanding of the issue and promote collective responsibility in combating the spread of false information.

The campaign’s emphasis on community engagement underscores the significance of collaborative action in addressing this complex challenge. By partnering with educational institutions and community groups, the campaign aims to empower individuals to become active agents in the fight against misinformation. The initiative recognizes the importance of reaching diverse audiences and tailoring messages to specific age groups and social contexts. This inclusive approach is essential to building a society-wide understanding of the issue and creating a collective commitment to responsible information consumption.

Ultimately, the campaign seeks to create a more resilient and informed society, where individuals possess the critical thinking skills to navigate the complex information landscape and resist the harmful effects of misinformation and disinformation. By fostering media literacy and promoting critical engagement with online content, the campaign strives to uphold the fundamental principles of human rights and protect vulnerable communities from the damaging consequences of misinformation. The campaign’s success hinges on the active participation of individuals and communities across British Columbia, working together to create a more informed and equitable society.
