Beltrami County Emergency Management Clarifies Misinformation Regarding TEAM RUBICON

Bemidji, Minnesota Grapples with Misinformation Campaign Targeting Disaster Relief Efforts

Bemidji, MN – In the aftermath of recent storms that ravaged Beltrami County, a disheartening wave of misinformation has targeted Team Rubicon, a veteran-led disaster relief organization, jeopardizing their vital work in the community. The misinformation campaign, allegedly orchestrated by unscrupulous contractors seeking to capitalize on the disaster, has falsely accused Team Rubicon of stealing business and intending to bill residents for their services. Local authorities and Team Rubicon representatives have moved swiftly to debunk these claims and reassure residents of the organization’s benevolent mission.

The Beltrami County Emergency Management department, in a recent update, addressed the misinformation, confirming a meeting with Team Rubicon to clarify the situation. Despite the unfortunate harassment stemming from the false narratives, Team Rubicon expressed admiration for the community’s resilience. The incident highlights the vulnerability of disaster-stricken areas to misinformation and exploitation, a recurring challenge in similar situations across the country.

Beltrami County Sheriff Jason Riggs, in a strongly worded statement, condemned the actions of the contractors spreading the misinformation, labeling them “nefarious” for attempting to profit from the community’s misfortune. He emphasized the widespread devastation, with millions of trees requiring cleanup, and the significant financial burden faced by many residents, particularly in Beltrami County, one of the most impoverished areas in the state. Team Rubicon’s free services are crucial for those unable to afford the cleanup costs, filling a vital gap in the recovery process.

Sheriff Riggs further underscored the easily identifiable presence of Team Rubicon members, distinguished by their signature grey shirts, and cautioned residents against scams perpetrated by individuals posing as representatives of the organization. He urged residents to contact law enforcement immediately if approached by anyone soliciting payment for disaster relief services under the guise of Team Rubicon. The Sheriff emphasized the importance of vigilance and thorough vetting of contractors, advocating for residents to understand their insurance coverage and avoid being pressured into agreements with potentially fraudulent businesses.

The misinformation campaign has not only targeted Team Rubicon but also cast a shadow over the reputation of legitimate local contractors and businesses genuinely committed to assisting in the recovery effort. Sheriff Riggs urged the community to report any instances of defamation against Team Rubicon or other volunteers, highlighting the collaborative spirit necessary for successful disaster recovery. He expressed gratitude for the numerous reputable local, regional, and state services contributing to the rebuilding process.

In a heartfelt message to Team Rubicon, Sheriff Riggs apologized on behalf of Beltrami County and Bemidji for the harassment they experienced, reaffirming the community’s deep appreciation for their selfless efforts. He emphasized that those spreading the misinformation likely do not represent the true spirit of the community, expressing confidence that the incident would not deter Team Rubicon’s vital mission. He reiterated the county’s full support for the organization, encouraging them to reach out for any assistance they may require. The Sheriff’s message underscores the importance of community support and collaboration in overcoming adversity and rebuilding after a disaster. He highlighted the collective responsibility to remain vigilant against misinformation and protect vulnerable residents from exploitation during challenging times.
