Disinformation Campaign Targets Azerbaijan Amidst Iran-Israel Conflict

The escalating conflict between Iran and Israel has once again become a breeding ground for disinformation, with Azerbaijan finding itself caught in the crosshairs of a concerted campaign to falsely implicate it in the hostilities. A wave of fabricated stories, primarily originating from Iranian and Armenian media outlets and amplified across social media platforms, alleges Azerbaijani complicity in Israeli strikes against Iran. These narratives, ranging from the existence of Israeli military bases on Azerbaijani soil to the recruitment of Azerbaijani spies, are designed to sow discord between Baku and Tehran and undermine Azerbaijan’s regional standing.

This is not the first time Azerbaijan has been subjected to such disinformation campaigns. Similar unfounded accusations surfaced during previous periods of tension between Baku and Tehran. However, the current wave of disinformation has reached a new level of intensity and absurdity, claiming, for example, that Israeli drones are being launched from Azerbaijani territory. The Azerbaijani government has vehemently denied these allegations, labeling them as deliberate disinformation intended to damage its reputation and relationships.

The Azerbaijani Milli Majlis Commission on Combating Foreign Interference and Hybrid Threats has identified organized groups operating from neighboring countries as the source of these disinformation campaigns. These groups, serving the interests of specific political circles, disseminate false information through various social media platforms, including Telegram, Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, and YouTube. Disturbingly, the commission’s monitoring also revealed the involvement of some ethnic Azerbaijanis and Azerbaijani citizens in spreading these falsehoods.

The primary drivers behind this disinformation campaign appear to be specific political and ideological centers in Iran and Armenia. The false narratives initially emerged in Persian and Armenian-language Telegram channels, often citing radical Iranian outlets, before spreading to Russian-language social networks. The aim is not only to provoke tensions between Azerbaijan and Iran but also to undermine the Azerbaijani government’s credibility within religious communities that sympathize with Iran. Analysis suggests that many of the channels disseminating this disinformation are registered in countries with large Armenian diasporas, primarily France, Germany, and Canada.

Despite the concerted efforts to draw Azerbaijan into the conflict, Baku has maintained a firm stance of neutrality. Azerbaijan has consistently emphasized its commitment to non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries and has no desire to be entangled in a war that does not concern it. Azerbaijani officials have reiterated their commitment to peaceful relations with both Iran and Israel and have dismissed the accusations as baseless and lacking any credible evidence. The recent visit of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to Azerbaijan further underscores the positive trajectory of bilateral relations between the two countries, despite attempts by fringe groups to disrupt them.

The accusations against Azerbaijan lack any factual basis. The alleged “map of Israeli bases” in Azerbaijan, circulated earlier this year in Iranian and Armenian media, was quickly debunked as a forgery. Similarly, the claim that Israeli drones are being launched from Azerbaijani territory defies logic and readily available evidence from radar and satellite tracking systems. Azerbaijan’s commitment to a balanced and independent foreign policy is evident in its neutral stance in other conflicts, such as the war between Russia and Ukraine, where it similarly faced disinformation campaigns from both sides.

Azerbaijan understands that it has nothing to gain from the destabilization of the region. A prolonged conflict between Iran and Israel poses significant risks, including economic and migration crises, and the potential for missile incidents near or on Azerbaijani territory. Furthermore, the conflict carries the added risk of radiation exposure should Iran’s nuclear facilities be damaged. Azerbaijan, having recently resolved its own territorial conflict, is now focused on reconstruction, development, and implementing large-scale infrastructure projects. These goals require peace and stability, not regional conflict. The disinformation campaign targeting Azerbaijan appears to be a cynical attempt to exploit the Iran-Israel conflict for political gain, undermining regional stability in the process.

Azerbaijan’s commitment to neutrality and peaceful development is clear. The ongoing disinformation campaign, while concerning, does not change the reality of Azerbaijan’s position. The country has consistently pursued a balanced foreign policy and remains focused on its own domestic priorities. The international community should be vigilant in identifying and countering such disinformation campaigns, which threaten to exacerbate existing tensions and undermine regional stability. Azerbaijan’s future lies in peace and development, not in becoming entangled in the conflicts of others. The disinformation campaign serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by nations striving for stability and prosperity in a complex geopolitical landscape. The international community should support Azerbaijan’s efforts to remain neutral and focus on its development agenda. False narratives and fabricated accusations should be exposed and condemned, preventing them from further destabilizing the region. Azerbaijan’s commitment to peace and development deserves recognition and support.
