In Bolu, a city in northwestern Türkiye known for its forests and natural beauty, young people open their social media feeds to a battlefield of competing environmental narratives. One post tells them that climate change is exaggerated, a myth promoted by foreign interests; another announces a new product as “100 percent sustainable,” a label that appears to settle the debate; a third argues that recycling is a pointless individual gesture that does nothing to stop pollution. All three messages look professional. All three may be accompanied by attractive graphics and confident captions. For a young person trying to understand the state of the planet, the experience is disorienting. The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology was not present here, but the tension identified by communication scholars was alive and well: information abundance has become as dangerous as information scarcity, because quantity replaces quality. In Bolu, this dilemma is not abstract. When the founders of the GreenTruth Digital Lab spoke with local young people, they found that nearly everyone cared deeply about environmental issues. They followed climate-related content, watched environmental videos, discussed sustainability online, and wanted to be part of a broader global movement. Yet many admitted they were not always sure whether the information they encountered was reliable. One university student put it simply: “Sometimes I see two completely different claims about the same environmental issue. Both look professional and convincing. I often don’t know which one is correct.” That admission lies at the heart of a new initiative designed not to tell young people what to think, but to give them the tools to think critically about what they read, watch, and share. GreenTruth Digital Lab, a project developed by YERKÜRE – From Local to Global Sustainable Development Association, aims to help Turkish youth distinguish facts from misinformation and become more confident digital citizens. In doing so, it confronts a challenge that is both generational and global: the battle for truth on the internet, fought one screenshot at a time.
2. The Global Challenge of Environmental Misinformation
The problem facing young people in Bolu is not unique. Across the world, social media has become one of the principal sources of information about climate change. A 2023 Reuters Institute report on digital news consumption found that younger audiences increasingly rely on short-form video platforms and social feeds rather than traditional news websites. This shift has consequences. Digital platforms are not neutral spaces; they are designed to maximize engagement, reward emotional responses, and prioritize content that travels quickly, even when that content is misleading. Environmental misinformation, greenwashing campaigns, and misleading narratives flourish in these conditions. Greenwashing, in particular, has grown more sophisticated. Companies spend enormous sums on advertisements and brand campaigns that present fossil fuel products, fast fashion, and single-use plastics as environmentally friendly or “net zero” without meaningful evidence. Young consumers, who often express strong concern about climate change, are a primary target of these strategies. But the result is not simply a market for greener products; it is an epistemic crisis in which a genuine scientific consensus coexists with a flood of carefully crafted doubt. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has spent more than three decades building a body of evidence, but a single viral video produced by an anonymous account can outweigh that evidence in the eyes of a teenager scrolling past. The problem is not a lack of information. It is an overwhelming amount of information of varying quality. This creates an environment in which many young people experience a kind of paralysis: they care about the environment, they want to act, they support sustainability, but they are not sure which claims are true, which organizations to trust, and which actions will actually reduce harm. Without the skills to verify sources and evaluate evidence, it becomes harder to make informed decisions. It also becomes harder to participate confidently in discussions about environmental issues, whether in a classroom, a family group chat, or a public debate. The result is a dangerous gap between concern and competence. Young people are expected to solve the climate crisis, yet the informational tools they are given are often no better than a social media algorithm designed to keep them scrolling. This reality inspired the creation of GreenTruth Digital Lab.
3. Listening First: How GreenTruth Digital Lab Was Designed
The founders of GreenTruth Digital Lab knew that they could not design a solution without first understanding the problem from the inside. They did not begin with workshops, manuals, or a predetermined curriculum. Instead, they spent time listening to young people in Bolu through informal conversations and structured needs assessments. What they heard shaped everything that followed. The participants in these assessments were not passive consumers of environmental news. They were active on platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok. They watched documentaries, followed environmental activists, and commented on posts about climate policy. Yet their trust in information was rarely based on the credibility of the original source. It was based on social cues. Many said they trusted content if it was shared by people they followed and respected. Others admitted they rarely checked where information originated before sharing it with friends or family. One participant explained: “If a post is shared by people I follow and trust, I usually assume it is correct. I never really thought about checking the original source.” For the project team, this was a crucial insight. Environmental misinformation was not an abstract concept to these young people. It was something that shaped their everyday digital behavior. They shared posts without verification. They accepted claims because they came from influential accounts. They were guided by popularity, not provenance. The team also learned that young people were not naive or careless. They wanted reliable information. They were simply operating in an environment that did not reward careful verification. A post that says, “Scientists confirm climate crisis is a hoax” is more sensational, more shareable, and more likely to appear on a feed than a nuanced summary of the latest climate research. In such an environment, even a thoughtful young person can become a vector for misinformation. The assessments revealed that the most urgent need was not more environmental content. There was already plenty of it. The most urgent need was a framework for judgment. Young people needed practical skills to question and evaluate environmental information, before they shared it, before they formed opinions about it, and before they allowed it to guide their choices. This reframed the project mission. GreenTruth Digital Lab would not attempt to replace environmental information with a rival set of messages. It would help young people become critical thinkers who could navigate the messy information landscape on their own.
4. From Passive Consumers to Critical Thinkers
GreenTruth Digital Lab is built on a simple but powerful combination: environmental awareness, media literacy, and digital citizenship. The project does not tell participants what to believe about any particular issue. It encourages them to ask questions. Who created this content? What evidence supports the claim? Can the information be verified through reliable sources? Why was this content published? Is it informing, persuading, raising awareness, or selling a product? These questions may seem basic, but they are rarely practiced by most social media users, young or old. Through workshops, discussions, and digital learning materials, participants explore how misinformation spreads online and how they can respond more critically and responsibly. They learn to identify greenwashing techniques: vague language, irrelevant claims, hidden trade-offs, and unsubstantiated labels. They study examples of misleading climate content that have gone viral, analyzing why those messages were successful and which emotional buttons they pressed. They practice fact-checking claims using credible environmental databases, scientific reports, and professional journalism. They also talk about the responsibility that comes with being a digital citizen. Sharing a post is not a private act. It is a public recommendation, a signal that can influence dozens, hundreds, or thousands of people. In an age of group chats and Instagram stories, a single careless share can amplify a falsehood long after the original poster has moved on. One participant described the experience as eye-opening: “I realized that misinformation is not always obvious. Sometimes it looks professional and trustworthy. Learning how to verify information made me feel much more confident.” Another participant reflected on a personal change: “Before, I would immediately share environmental posts if I agreed with them. Now I stop and check where the information comes from first.” These quotes point to a subtle but profound transformation. The participants are not becoming cynical or distrustful of everything they see. They are becoming more discerning. They are learning to distinguish between an appealing message and a reliable one. They are also learning that confidence comes from verification, not from volume. The project treats digital literacy as a skill that can be taught, practiced, and improved, just like reading, writing, or mathematics. That approach resonates with young people because it respects their intelligence. It does not ask them to accept a list of approved facts. It asks them to build a set of tools they can use across all areas of life.
5. Small Habits, Big Ripple Effects
The changes described by participants may seem small. One person learned to check a source before sharing. Another now stops to look at the author of a website. A third knows to ask whether a “100 percent sustainable” product has any external certification. But these small habits, repeated across a community, can have an outsized effect. Digital resilience is built through everyday practices, not through occasional lectures. When a young person learns to verify one claim, they often begin to verify others. They begin to notice patterns in how misinformation works. They see that both sides of a political debate may use exaggerated statistics, or that a brand selling a supposed green product may also be investing heavily in fossil fuels. Slowly, they become less vulnerable to manipulation. Just as importantly, they begin to share what they know with others. Young people in Bolu have told the project team that they now discuss verification strategies with classmates. They warn friends about accounts that spread false claims. They show parents how to reverse-search an image or check the date of an article. In this way, knowledge spreads beyond the workshop itself. A young person who learns to question a misleading environmental claim today may help dozens of others become more critical information consumers tomorrow. This ripple effect is crucial because misinformation is a social phenomenon. It does not persist only because individual people are fooled; it persists because information moves through social networks. If trust in a social network can spread, distrust of misinformation can also spread. It is a form of community immunity. Furthermore, the skills taught by GreenTruth Digital Lab are not limited to environmental topics. The ability to ask who is behind a message, what evidence is provided, and why the message exists applies equally to health information, political advertising, and viral rumors. By anchoring the lessons in the environment, a topic that young people genuinely care about, the project makes the learning experience relevant and memorable. Participants are not practicing abstract theories. They are practicing on content they encounter daily, which makes the lessons stick. The project’s impact will not be captured in a single metric. It will be seen in the way that a generation of Turkish youth begins to approach the internet with a healthier degree of skepticism and a stronger sense of agency. It will be seen when a young person chooses to fact-check a dramatic climate claim instead of sharing it with indignation, and when that one decision, repeated across a network, changes the quality of the information ecosystem.
6. Looking Ahead: An Essential Civic Skill
The real impact of GreenTruth Digital Lab will not be measured only by the number of workshops delivered or resources created, although those will matter. Its success will be measured over time, in communities, through the long, slow process of building a cultural norm around information verification. As environmental challenges become increasingly global, and as digital spaces continue to shape public understanding, the ability to navigate information responsibly is becoming an essential civic skill. Democracy depends on citizens who can make informed decisions. Climate policy depends on publics who can distinguish between evidence and spin. And a sustainable future depends on young people who are not paralyzed by contradiction, but empowered by confidence. The experience in Bolu has shown that young people want reliable information and practical tools to distinguish the facts about climate change from various forms of misinformation. They are not asking to be protected from uncomfortable truths. They are asking for a fair chance to find those truths in a landscape designed to obscure them. GreenTruth Digital Lab is not a silver bullet. It is, however, an important example of what local initiatives can do when they take the time to listen, to design thoughtfully, and to trust young people as capable learners rather than passive audiences. The project was initially published by the DDI Spark web site, established as a Regional Support Mechanism implemented by Metamorphosis Foundation and TechSoup’s Digital Activism Program team, in partnership with CIVICUS under the Digital Democracy Initiative. The broader support for this initiative reflects a growing international recognition that digital literacy is not a luxury but a necessity. In Türkiye and around the world, the fight against environmental misinformation is inseparable from the fight for democracy itself. When people cannot agree on what is true, they cannot agree on how to act. When they cannot act together, they cannot solve shared problems. By helping young people become more confident digital citizens, GreenTruth Digital Lab is contributing to something larger than environmental education. It is helping to build a public culture in which facts matter, evidence counts, and citizens feel equipped to participate in decisions that will shape the planet for generations to come. The road ahead is long, but the direction is clear.
