UN Launches Global Survey to Combat Misinformation and Disinformation Impact on Sustainable Development Goals
NEW YORK, NY (October 26, 2025) – The United Nations has launched a comprehensive global survey aimed at assessing the far-reaching effects of misinformation and disinformation on the progress of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This initiative stems from the Global Digital Compact, a landmark agreement adopted by UN Member States in 2024, which emphasizes the urgent need to address the pervasive challenge of misleading information in the digital age. Action 35(e) of the Compact specifically calls for evaluating the impact of this phenomenon on the achievement of the SDGs, recognizing the detrimental effect it can have on various aspects of sustainable development.
The survey, spearheaded by the United Nations Department of Global Communications (DGC), represents a crucial step in fulfilling the mandate of Action 35(e). The DGC, acting as the lead coordinating entity for this initiative, aims to collect comprehensive data and insights from a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including UN entities, Member States, civil society organizations, academic institutions, tech companies, and individuals across the globe. By gathering input from diverse perspectives, the survey seeks to paint a holistic picture of the current landscape of misinformation and disinformation and its complex interplay with the SDGs. It will serve as a critical resource for understanding the challenges, identifying effective solutions, and developing informed policies to mitigate the negative consequences of false and misleading information.
The survey delves into a range of critical areas related to misinformation and disinformation, including its impact on different SDGs, the effectiveness of existing countermeasures, and the identification of best practices for addressing the issue. Participants are invited to share their experiences, perspectives, and data related to the spread of misinformation, its effects on specific development goals, and the challenges faced in combating it. They are also encouraged to highlight successful initiatives and strategies employed to counter misinformation and promote accurate information dissemination. The responses received will be crucial in informing the development of evidence-based policies and interventions at both national and international levels.
The survey’s comprehensive scope reflects the multifaceted nature of the challenge posed by misinformation and disinformation. It explores the impacts across various thematic areas, including health, education, climate change, gender equality, and peace and security. For instance, the survey investigates how misinformation about vaccines can hinder progress towards SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being). It also examines how disinformation campaigns can undermine trust in democratic processes, thereby threatening SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions). By addressing these diverse aspects, the survey aims to gain a deeper understanding of the intricate ways in which misinformation can impede progress towards a more sustainable and equitable future.
The collected data will be instrumental in compiling a comprehensive catalog of global efforts to counter misinformation and disinformation, showcasing best practices and achievements from around the world. This catalog will serve as a valuable resource for stakeholders seeking to learn from successful interventions and adapt them to their own contexts. Moreover, the survey will help identify existing gaps in policies and strategies, highlighting areas where further action is needed. The findings will be used to inform future policy guidance and recommendations to support the achievement of the SDGs, contributing to a more cohesive and effective global response to the challenges of misinformation.
The survey remains open until December 31, 2025, providing ample opportunity for stakeholders to participate and share their valuable inputs. The relevant Ministry or designated national authority is encouraged to complete the survey on behalf of their respective governments. Individuals and organizations are also welcome to participate. By fostering a collaborative and participatory approach, the UN aims to create a robust and effective framework for addressing the complex challenges of misinformation and ensuring that the digital age serves as a catalyst for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
