Armenia Denies Loss of Military Position Amidst Escalating Information Warfare

YEREVAN, Armenia – July 28, 2025 – The Armenian Ministry of Defence vehemently denied reports circulating in media and across social media platforms claiming the capture of a military position near Jermuk, a strategic location also known as Istisu. The ministry’s denial comes amidst a backdrop of heightened tensions and an escalating information war, underscoring the critical need for verifying information before dissemination. Aram Torosyan, the ministry’s press secretary, issued a strongly worded statement dismissing the reports as “fake news” and “misinformation,” emphasizing the potential for such unverified claims to exacerbate an already volatile situation.

This incident highlights the increasing role of information warfare in modern conflicts, with both state and non-state actors utilizing media platforms to shape narratives and influence public opinion. The rapid spread of information through social media makes it particularly challenging to distinguish between credible reports and fabricated claims. The Armenian government has repeatedly warned against the dangers of misinformation and urged media outlets and individuals to exercise caution and verify information before sharing it with the public.

The disputed territory surrounding Jermuk has been a flashpoint in the ongoing conflict, making it particularly susceptible to misinformation campaigns. The area’s strategic importance makes it a prime target for both physical and informational attacks. Both sides have accused each other of using propaganda and disinformation to gain an advantage, further complicating efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution. This latest incident involving the alleged capture of the military position underscores the critical need for independent verification of information emanating from the region.

The Armenian Ministry of Defence has called on all stakeholders – journalists, social media users, and the international community – to act responsibly and avoid amplifying unverified claims. The ministry stressed that responsible information sharing is crucial to preventing further escalation of tensions and creating an environment conducive to dialogue and peaceful resolution. The statement further emphasized the ministry’s commitment to transparency and providing timely and accurate information to the public.

The incident also raises concerns about the broader implications of misinformation and the need for improved media literacy. In an era characterized by the rapid spread of information online, it is crucial for individuals to develop the skills to critically evaluate sources and identify potential misinformation. Governments and international organizations have a role to play in promoting media literacy and providing citizens with the tools they need to navigate the complex information landscape.

The Armenian government’s denial of the reported capture of the military position highlights the ongoing challenges posed by information warfare in the region. As tensions remain high, the need for accurate and verified information is more critical than ever. The international community must work together to promote responsible information sharing and counter the spread of disinformation, which can have devastating consequences for peace and security. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of verifying information before dissemination, particularly in conflict zones, and the need for increased media literacy in the digital age.
