Armenian Fact-Checkers Join Global Fight Against Misinformation at Rio Summit

In a significant stride for media integrity and the fight against misinformation, Armenia marked its debut at the prestigious International Fact-Checking Network GlobalFact 12 Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, last month. CivilNet, a leading Armenian media outlet, represented the nation’s burgeoning fact-checking community at this major international gathering, signaling Armenia’s commitment to upholding journalistic accuracy and combating the pervasive spread of false narratives. The summit, hosted by the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), served as a crucial platform for over 300 fact-checkers from across the globe to share expertise, discuss emerging challenges, and forge collaborative strategies to enhance fact-checking efforts worldwide.

CivilNet’s participation, spearheaded by Ani Grigoryan, head of the outlet’s fact-checking unit, signifies a crucial step in Armenia’s journey towards strengthening its fact-checking ecosystem. Joining the IFCN in 2023, CivilNet has pledged to adhere to the network’s rigorous standards of transparency, accuracy, and collaborative fact-checking. Grigoryan’s presence at the summit provided an invaluable opportunity to learn from global experts, acquire cutting-edge tools and techniques, and establish vital international connections to bolster Armenia’s capabilities in combatting misinformation. This engagement with the global fact-checking community underscores CivilNet’s dedication to promoting evidence-based journalism and fostering a more informed public discourse in Armenia.

The GlobalFact 12 Summit addressed a wide spectrum of critical topics related to fact-checking and combating disinformation. The sessions explored legal frameworks designed to tackle the spread of false information, delved into the ethical considerations of journalism in the digital age, and examined the burgeoning role of artificial intelligence in verifying information. A key focus of the summit was the growing concern surrounding platform accountability and the need for effective regulations to curb misinformation on social media platforms. The discussions highlighted the experiences of various democracies, particularly Brazil, in grappling with these challenges and developing strategies to hold social media companies accountable for the content shared on their platforms.

The summit emphasized the vital role of fact-checking in safeguarding democratic values and preventing the erosion of truth in the face of manipulative information campaigns. Angie Drobnic Holan, director of the IFCN, underscored the importance of fact-checking as a bulwark against false narratives, highlighting its crucial function in preserving an accurate historical record. Fact-checkers, she emphasized, act as a vital defense against the entrenchment of misinformation, holding steadfast to reality and ensuring that false narratives do not distort public understanding and historical accounts.

The insights and connections gained at the GlobalFact 12 Summit are expected to significantly enhance CivilNet’s fact-checking capabilities and contribute to the growth of the broader fact-checking community in Armenia. By actively engaging with the global network of fact-checkers, CivilNet is positioned to play a crucial role in promoting media literacy, fostering critical thinking skills, and empowering citizens to discern credible information from misinformation. This participation marks a turning point in Armenia’s efforts to counter disinformation and cultivate a more informed and resilient information environment.

The summit also served as a platform to highlight regional challenges and share best practices in tackling misinformation within specific contexts. Discussions explored the unique challenges faced by countries in different regions, such as the spread of disinformation through messaging apps, the use of manipulated media, and the targeting of vulnerable populations. By sharing experiences and strategies, participants gleaned valuable insights into effective approaches for countering disinformation in diverse environments and adapting fact-checking methodologies to address specific regional challenges. The emphasis on regional collaboration underscored the importance of building networks and sharing resources to strengthen fact-checking capacity across the globe.
