Türkiye Rejects Disinformation Campaign Amidst Syrian Ceasefire

Ankara, Türkiye – The Turkish government vehemently denied accusations of targeting Syria’s Druze community, denouncing the claims as a calculated disinformation campaign aimed at undermining its foreign policy. The Center for Combating Disinformation issued a statement on Saturday, refuting the allegations circulating in certain media outlets. The center emphasized Türkiye’s commitment to humanitarian principles, respect for human rights, and international law, underscoring its dedication to Syria’s political unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. The government maintains its focus is on promoting regional peace and stability, rejecting any form of ethnic, religious, or sectarian discrimination.

Türkiye’s stance on Syria, as reiterated by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, prioritizes humanitarian needs over sectarian or ethnic identities. This approach guides all humanitarian aid and diplomatic efforts, extending to millions of Syrian refugees hosted by Türkiye since the onset of the crisis. The government provides assistance to all communities without discrimination, ensuring equal treatment regardless of sectarian or ethnic background. The statement highlighted the inclusive nature of Türkiye’s aid programs, benefiting all Syrian communities without exception. However, the government expressed concern that these baseless accusations are designed to incite unrest among religious groups within the region’s fragile demographic structure.

The statement coincided with a ceasefire announcement by the Syrian presidency in the southern province of Sweida, following days of fierce clashes between Bedouin Arab tribes and armed Druze militias. The violence, which erupted on July 13th, intensified after Israeli airstrikes targeted Syrian military infrastructure in Damascus. Israel claimed the strikes were intended to protect the Druze population. Türkiye condemned these events as part of a broader geopolitical propaganda campaign, reaffirming its commitment to regional peace, stability, and social cohesion. The government vowed to counter divisive activities and sectarian conflict scenarios that jeopardize Syria’s political unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

The Turkish government appealed for vigilance against unverified and distorted information spread with malicious intent. The Center for Combating Disinformation urged the public to exercise caution and critical thinking when encountering such content. It pledged to continue providing accurate and factual information to both national and international audiences, countering the spread of misinformation. The statement underlined Türkiye’s unwavering commitment to transparency and accurate reporting.

The ongoing tensions in Sweida highlight the complex and volatile situation in Syria. The recent clashes follow a significant political shift, with the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad fleeing to Russia in December 2024, effectively ending the decades-long rule of the Baath Party. This transition marks a turning point in Syrian politics, with the formation of a new transitional government under President Ahmad al-Sharaa in January 2025. The new government faces the formidable challenge of stabilizing the country and navigating complex internal and regional dynamics.

The ceasefire declaration offers a glimmer of hope for de-escalation in Sweida, but the underlying tensions remain. The situation underscores the fragility of peace in the region and the need for continued efforts towards reconciliation and stability. Türkiye’s commitment to supporting a unified and sovereign Syria, coupled with its rejection of sectarianism, positions it as a key player in the ongoing efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis. The government’s firm stance against disinformation further reinforces its commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region.
