Uttar Pradesh Police Combat Misinformation Surrounding Maha Kumbh with Robust Cyber Patrol and Legal Action

Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh – The Uttar Pradesh Police have launched a comprehensive crackdown on social media accounts spreading misinformation about the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. Following a directive from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, authorities have initiated legal action against 53 accounts over the past month for disseminating misleading posts, including old videos falsely linked to the religious event. This proactive approach aims to curb the spread of fake news and maintain public order during the significant gathering.

The state police, under the leadership of Director General of Police (DGP) Prashant Kumar, have implemented a multi-pronged strategy to combat the issue. Continuous cyber patrolling by Uttar Pradesh Police and expert agencies is being conducted to monitor social media platforms for misleading content. Upon identifying such posts, swift action is taken, including legal proceedings against the responsible accounts. This robust monitoring system aims to identify and neutralize misinformation before it can gain widespread traction.

One instance of misinformation involved a video of a fire incident in Egypt that was falsely portrayed as a blaze at the Maha Kumbh bus stand. The video, which originated from a pipeline fire in Cairo on July 14, 2020, was shared with claims that numerous vehicles had been destroyed. The Prayagraj Kumbh Mela administration and Uttar Pradesh Police promptly debunked the claim on their official social media accounts and initiated legal action against several accounts involved in spreading the false narrative.

Another misleading video, taken from a promotional event for the film "Pushpa 2" in Patna in November 2024, was falsely presented as an incident from the Maha Kumbh. The video depicted an unruly crowd and was misrepresented as showing nationalist and religious individuals throwing footwear at army personnel. Authorities quickly confirmed the video’s true origin and initiated legal proceedings against 15 social media accounts for their attempt to incite communal tension by spreading the fabricated story.

The Uttar Pradesh Police’s vigilance extends beyond identifying and addressing misleading videos. On January 13, 2025, an account falsely reported a routine fire drill conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Fire Service as an actual fire incident at the Kumbh Mela. This incident highlights the range of misinformation being circulated and the proactive measures taken by authorities to counter it. The swift debunking of this false alarm prevented unnecessary panic and ensured the smooth continuation of the event.

The ongoing crackdown on misinformation surrounding the Maha Kumbh underscores the Uttar Pradesh Police’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the event and ensuring public safety. By actively monitoring social media and taking decisive legal action against those spreading false information, authorities are working to maintain a peaceful and orderly atmosphere during this important religious gathering. The 53 accounts subjected to legal action serve as a stark warning against the propagation of fake news and underscore the authorities’ resolve to combat misinformation proactively. The continued cyber patrol and swift response to misleading posts are crucial in preventing the escalation of rumors and maintaining public trust in official information sources. The Uttar Pradesh Police’s efforts in combating misinformation are essential for ensuring the safe and smooth conduction of the Maha Kumbh and safeguarding public order.
