Government Cracks Down on 30,000 Fake Social Media Accounts Amid Rising Online Fraud

Hanoi, Vietnam – In a concerted effort to combat the escalating threat of online fraud, the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced the removal of 30,000 fake social media accounts during the first half of 2025. This significant action underscores the government’s commitment to protecting its citizens from increasingly sophisticated scams proliferating across digital platforms. Le Quang Tu Do, Director of the Department of Broadcasting, Television, and Electronic Information, revealed this achievement during a press briefing on July 24th, highlighting the collaborative efforts between the ministry and major social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok.

The ministry’s proactive approach involves a multi-pronged strategy encompassing technical measures, public awareness campaigns, and international cooperation. Beyond removing fraudulent accounts, the ministry has actively engaged social media platforms, urging them to enhance their content moderation algorithms, particularly leveraging the power of artificial intelligence. This collaborative approach seeks to identify and remove malicious content swiftly and efficiently. Recognizing the transnational nature of many online scams, the Vietnamese government is also working with international partners to disrupt these criminal networks at their source.

Beyond collaborating with social media platforms, the ministry has launched a robust public awareness campaign to equip citizens with the knowledge and tools to defend themselves against online threats. This includes disseminating information through text messages directly to citizens, warning them about the latest scams circulating on social media. The Department of Broadcasting, Television, and Electronic Information maintains an updated platform on its official website detailing emerging scam tactics and providing a mechanism for the public to report suspicious activity. This interactive platform fosters a sense of shared responsibility in combating online fraud, empowering citizens to actively participate in safeguarding the digital landscape.

The rapid advancement of technology has created fertile ground for online fraud, with scams becoming increasingly complex and widespread. Criminals exploit the anonymity and reach of the internet to impersonate government agencies, companies, and public figures, causing significant financial and reputational damage to individuals and organizations. These scams often involve elaborate schemes, preying on individuals’ trust and vulnerabilities. The transnational nature of these criminal networks further complicates enforcement efforts, requiring international cooperation and information sharing.

The Vietnamese government emphasizes that while technical solutions are crucial, the long-term solution lies in strengthening each citizen’s “digital immunity” against online fraud. This involves fostering media literacy, critical thinking skills, and a healthy skepticism towards online information. By empowering individuals to identify and avoid potentially harmful online content, the government aims to create a more resilient and secure online environment. This proactive approach to citizen education is seen as a cornerstone of the government’s long-term strategy to combat online fraud.

Looking ahead, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is calling for enhanced collaboration between media outlets and law enforcement agencies to proactively identify and alert the public about emerging online threats. This collaborative approach aims to prevent losses before they occur and foster a safer, healthier, and more trustworthy online environment for all Vietnamese citizens. The government recognizes that a collective effort involving government agencies, social media platforms, media organizations, and citizens is crucial to effectively combat the ever-evolving landscape of online fraud. This multi-faceted approach aims to create a safer, more secure digital world for all Vietnamese citizens.
