Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan Forge Alliance Against Disinformation and Fake News
In a significant move to combat the growing menace of disinformation and fake news, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have solidified their commitment to collaborative efforts. Representatives from both nations recently convened in Tashkent, culminating in the signing of a comprehensive Cooperation Plan in the Information Sphere for 2025. This landmark agreement underscores the shared determination to safeguard their information landscapes from manipulation and distortion.
The meeting, held between officials from Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Culture and Information and Uzbekistan’s Agency of Information and Mass Communications, served as a platform to solidify a strategic partnership aimed at addressing the multifaceted challenges posed by disinformation. The resulting Cooperation Plan, set to guide joint initiatives until 2025, outlines a range of concrete measures designed to enhance media integrity, foster professional development, and bolster the resilience of both countries against malicious information campaigns.
This collaborative endeavor stems from the high-level directives issued following Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s visit to Kazakhstan in August. During this visit, President Mirziyoyev and Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev engaged in productive discussions on bilateral cooperation, particularly in the realm of mass communications. The ensuing joint statements and decisions paved the way for the development of this comprehensive Cooperation Plan, reflecting the shared recognition of the urgent need to address the escalating threat of disinformation.
The Cooperation Plan outlines a multi-pronged approach encompassing various key areas. These include the establishment of mechanisms for content exchange between media outlets, the organization of joint training programs and seminars for media professionals, and initiatives to enhance the qualifications of press secretaries. Furthermore, the plan emphasizes the importance of nurturing young journalistic talent and fostering cross-border collaboration to counter disinformation campaigns effectively.
