US Sanctions Iranian and Russian Entities for Election Interference

The United States has imposed sanctions on entities in Iran and Russia for their alleged attempts to interfere in the 2024 US presidential election. The Treasury Department identified a subsidiary of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps and the Moscow-based Center for Geopolitical Expertise (CGE), an organization affiliated with Russian military intelligence, as the primary actors in these schemes. These entities are accused of employing disinformation campaigns and other tactics to manipulate public opinion and potentially influence the election outcome.

The Treasury Department alleges that the CGE has been engaged in influence operations since at least 2023. These operations involved spreading disinformation about candidates and creating deepfakes – manipulated videos designed to appear authentic – to sow discord and undermine public trust. One such video, according to the Treasury, contained fabricated accusations against a vice-presidential candidate, though the targeted individual was not specified.

The Treasury Department stated that these foreign actors aimed to “stoke socio-political tensions and influence the US electorate.” These activities echo similar concerns raised during previous election cycles about foreign interference, particularly from Russia and Iran. The sanctions are intended to disrupt these operations by freezing assets and restricting financial transactions of the designated entities.

These actions underscore the ongoing threat posed by foreign interference in democratic processes. The US intelligence community has consistently warned of the potential for such interference, and these sanctions represent a concrete step to counter these threats. The US government has vowed to remain vigilant against any attempts to undermine the integrity of its elections.

This latest round of sanctions comes amid heightened tensions between the US and both Iran and Russia. The US has accused Iran of supporting terrorism and pursuing destabilizing activities in the Middle East, while relations with Russia have deteriorated sharply following its invasion of Ukraine. The election interference accusations further complicate these already strained relationships.

The sanctions against Iran and Russia highlight the growing challenges to electoral integrity in the digital age. Disinformation, deepfakes, and other forms of online manipulation pose a significant threat to democratic institutions, and combating these tactics requires a coordinated effort from governments, social media platforms, and the public. The US government’s actions signal a commitment to defend its democratic processes from foreign interference.
