Baku Denounces Disinformation Campaign Targeting Azerbaijani President and State Institutions

BAKU, Azerbaijan – A sophisticated disinformation campaign aimed at discrediting Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev and key state institutions has been uncovered, involving fabricated news reports and manipulated social media content. The false information alleges that President Aliyev bestowed the Order of Friendship upon Armenian Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan and Security Council Secretary Armen Grigoryan, a claim vehemently denied by Azerbaijani authorities and independent fact-checkers.

The disinformation campaign gained traction through a video shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) by Armenian political analyst Kevork Almasian. This video featured a counterfeit screenshot purportedly originating from the Trend News Agency website, alongside a fabricated news story attributed to unnamed "UK media." Trend News Agency categorically refutes the authenticity of this content, asserting that no such report has ever been published on any of its platforms.

Trend News Agency has condemned the video as a crudely produced manipulation, clearly intended to sow discord and spread disinformation. The agency emphasized its commitment to journalistic integrity and urged readers and media professionals to exercise caution and rely solely on verified sources for information. Official updates from Trend are exclusively disseminated through its official website, www.trend.az, and verified social media channels.

The Azerbaijani government views this incident as part of a broader campaign to undermine its credibility and damage its reputation within the international community. Officials have expressed concern about the escalating use of disinformation tactics to manipulate public opinion and escalate tensions in the region. They have called on international bodies and media organizations to be vigilant in identifying and countering such malicious campaigns.

This fabricated story highlights the increasing threat posed by disinformation in the digital age. The ease with which false narratives can be created and disseminated online underscores the need for heightened media literacy and critical thinking skills. Azerbaijan’s experience serves as a cautionary tale, underscoring the vulnerability of even established news outlets and government institutions to sophisticated disinformation campaigns.

The incident also underscores the importance of fact-checking and verifying information before sharing it online. Reliable news sources play a vital role in combating disinformation and ensuring that accurate information reaches the public. The international community must work together to develop strategies to address the growing threat of disinformation and protect the integrity of the information ecosystem. This includes promoting media literacy, supporting independent fact-checking organizations, and holding social media platforms accountable for the spread of false information. The Azerbaijani government’s strong response to this disinformation campaign sends a clear message that it will not tolerate attempts to undermine its credibility and will actively work to counter such malicious activities.
