Ukrainian MP Revives Pro-Russian Narratives on TikTok, Sparking Concerns About Disinformation and Political Maneuvering

A veteran Ukrainian politician, Yuriy Boyko, has resurrected pre-2022 pro-Russian narratives on the social media platform TikTok, raising alarms about the resurgence of disinformation campaigns and potential political maneuvering amidst the ongoing war. Boyko, chair of the Platform for Life and Peace faction, a successor to the pro-Russian Party of Regions, has leveraged TikTok’s reach to disseminate Kremlin-aligned talking points, echoing historical revisionism, alleged discrimination against Russian speakers, and accusations of Western manipulation. This resurgence of pro-Russian rhetoric comes at a sensitive time, with Ukraine facing both internal political dynamics and shifting international perceptions of the war.

Boyko’s TikTok videos, some garnering hundreds of thousands of views, regurgitate familiar themes from the Russian propaganda playbook. He invokes narratives of historical oppression, a "war on monuments," and the victimization of Russian speakers and the Russian Orthodox Church. Conspicuously absent from his pronouncements is any mention of Russia’s full-scale invasion or direct acknowledgment of Russian aggression. Instead, he attributes Ukraine’s economic hardships to "grant eaters," a pejorative term for pro-Western organizations, echoing the Kremlin’s portrayal of Ukraine as a Western puppet. This "external governance" narrative seeks to undermine Ukrainian sovereignty and justify Russia’s military actions.

Boyko’s rhetoric extends beyond economic grievances, delving into culturally divisive issues. He frames Western values, including LGBTQ+ rights, as foreign impositions threatening traditional Christian values. This aligns with Russia’s own conservative rhetoric and its portrayal of the West as a decadent and morally corrupt force. The use of such narratives on TikTok, a platform particularly popular among younger audiences, raises concerns about the potential for these messages to influence public opinion and sow division within Ukrainian society.

The timing of Boyko’s renewed activity on social media coincides with speculation about upcoming elections in Ukraine, despite the current martial law prohibiting such proceedings. His videos focusing on economic hardships and the plight of internally displaced persons could be interpreted as veiled campaign appeals. However, current polling data suggests that Boyko and his party remain deeply unpopular, raising questions about the intended audience for his messages. Some analysts speculate that Boyko’s pronouncements are directed not only at Ukrainian voters, but also at audiences in the Kremlin and the White House.

By echoing Kremlin talking points, Boyko may be vying for Moscow’s favor and potentially positioning himself as a viable alternative to the current Ukrainian leadership. Simultaneously, his references to American identity politics and alleged misuse of aid money, along with allusions to the 2025 US presidential election, suggest an attempt to exploit perceived tensions between Ukraine and the West. The creation of Boyko’s TikTok account shortly after Donald Trump’s presidential victory further fuels speculation that he seeks to capitalize on a perceived shift in American foreign policy.

Boyko’s social media blitz serves as a test of Ukrainian society’s resilience to pro-Russian narratives. While his statements have provoked strong reactions, including questioning by the State Security Service and removal from a parliamentary committee, recent polling data indicates growing resistance to such narratives. A significant majority of Ukrainians now reject the notion of oppression against Russian speakers and support de-Russification efforts. This suggests that while the threat of disinformation persists, Ukrainian society has become more immune to Kremlin-sponsored propaganda.

However, Boyko’s resurgence highlights the continued need for vigilance against pro-Russian influence operations. His rhetoric mirrors patterns observed in other countries in the region, where pro-Russian forces have gained ground. This underscores the importance of proactive measures by Western governments and intelligence agencies to counter disinformation and build resilience to foreign interference. Continued support for Ukraine, both militarily and in the information sphere, remains crucial to counteracting Russian aggression and its accompanying propaganda campaigns. The stakes are high, and the ability to effectively address these narratives is essential for safeguarding Ukraine’s sovereignty and democratic future.
