Taiwan and Eswatini Forge Strategic Partnership to Combat Disinformation and Advance Technological Development
Mbabane, Eswatini – Taiwan and Eswatini solidified their commitment to collaborative growth and development through the signing of a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) focused on combating information manipulation and fostering information integrity. Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung of Taiwan and Foreign Minister Pholile Shakantu of Eswatini formalized the agreement, marking a significant step in their joint efforts to address the growing threat of disinformation in the digital age. The MOU outlines a framework for cooperation in various areas, including media literacy enhancement, development of robust information verification mechanisms, and implementation of effective strategies to counter the spread of fake news. The signing of the MOU coincided with Foreign Minister Lin’s official visit to Eswatini, during which he engaged in a series of high-level meetings and events. A key highlight of his visit was the attendance at the inauguration ceremony of the Eswatini 5G Operations Center, alongside Eswatini Prime Minister Russell Dlamini. This event symbolized the tangible progress being made in the realm of technological cooperation between the two nations. In a separate meeting with King Mswati III, Foreign Minister Lin unveiled plans for a significant oil reserve facility, representing the largest joint engineering project undertaken since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Taiwan and Eswatini. Furthermore, Minister Lin announced an additional contribution of US$500,000 to expand the Women’s Start-up Microfinance Revolving Fund, a program initiated by Taiwan in 2023 that has demonstrated remarkable success in empowering female entrepreneurs in Eswatini. This financial boost will further amplify the impact of the program, enabling more women to access crucial resources and support to launch and grow their businesses.
