Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams Clamps Down on Fake News Surrounding Scholar’s Visit

TIRUMALA – The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), the governing body of the renowned Tirumala Venkateswara Temple, has taken decisive action against the spread of misinformation regarding the visit of prominent religious scholar Brahmasri Chaganti Koteswara Rao. A formal complaint has been lodged with the University Police Station in Tirupati on January 28th, targeting various social media entities and individuals responsible for disseminating false news. Further complaints have been filed with the Press Information Bureau (PIB) in both New Delhi and Vijayawada, underscoring the seriousness with which the TTD is addressing this issue. The TTD also initiated action with YouTube Meta Management, requesting the revocation of licenses of those involved in propagating the misleading information. This multi-pronged approach reflects the TTD’s commitment to safeguarding its reputation and that of the esteemed scholar against malicious online activity.

The controversy arose following reports circulating on social media platforms, distorting the facts surrounding Brahmasri Chaganti Koteswara Rao’s visit to Tirumala. The TTD maintains that despite transparently communicating the details of the scholar’s scheduled visit and subsequent postponement, certain media outlets and journalists persisted in disseminating fabricated narratives. These unfounded claims not only misrepresented the circumstances of the visit but also cast an unwarranted negative light on both the scholar and the TTD. The TTD emphasizes that these actions were driven by malicious intent, aimed at tarnishing the image of the revered institution and the respected religious figure.

The original schedule, finalized on December 20th, included a pravachanam (religious discourse) by Brahmasri Chaganti Koteswara Rao at the Mahati Auditorium on January 16th, following his darshan (view) of the deity Sri Venkateswara on January 14th. However, a tragic stampede incident in Tirupati on January 8th prompted TTD officials to request the scholar to postpone his discourse. Brahmasri Chaganti Koteswara Rao graciously acceded to the request, demonstrating his sensitivity to the situation. The TTD has assured the public that revised dates for the pravachanam will be announced in due course. The postponement was a direct consequence of the unfortunate incident and reflects the TTD’s prioritization of public safety and well-being.

Contrary to the misinformation circulating online, Brahmasri Chaganti Koteswara Rao declined the special arrangements offered by the TTD for his visit. While the TTD had planned to provide biometric access for Srivari darshan and battery-operated vehicles for transportation from the Rambagicha Rest House to the temple, the scholar opted for a more humble approach. He chose to experience the darshan through the Vaikuntham Queue Complex, the standard procedure for devotees. This act of humility underscores the scholar’s respect for the sanctity of the temple and his desire to experience the darshan alongside other devotees. The TTD’s proactive measures in offering convenient arrangements demonstrate their reverence for the scholar, while his decision to decline them showcases his unassuming nature.

The TTD’s strong response to the dissemination of false information underscores its unwavering commitment to preserving the sanctity and reputation of the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple. The institution has issued a stern warning, asserting that it will pursue legal action against any individual or organization found to be deliberately spreading misinformation and attempting to damage the TTD’s image. This proactive stance serves as a deterrent against future attempts to malign the temple’s reputation and emphasizes the importance of responsible reporting and social media engagement.

The incident highlights the increasing challenges posed by the rapid spread of misinformation in the digital age. The TTD’s firm action serves as a timely reminder of the need for critical evaluation of information encountered online. It also underscores the role of responsible journalism and the importance of verifying information before disseminating it. The TTD’s commitment to transparency and its swift response to counter false narratives will contribute to maintaining public trust and ensuring the integrity of information surrounding the revered institution. The incident also serves as a valuable lesson for other religious institutions and public figures in navigating the complexities of the digital landscape and safeguarding their reputations against online misinformation campaigns.
