Ukraine Exposes Russian Psychological Operation Targeting Troop Morale

KYIV – Ukrainian authorities have unveiled a sophisticated Russian psychological operation designed to demoralize Ukrainian troops and undermine public trust in the country’s leadership. The operation involved coercing Ukrainian prisoners of war into participating in staged videos promoting surrender and disobedience, while simultaneously utilizing a network of Ukrainian collaborators to disseminate the propaganda through social media and other channels. This multi-pronged approach underscores the Kremlin’s escalating information warfare tactics as the conflict intensifies.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) and the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast Prosecutor’s Office have apprehended three Ukrainian citizens – residing in Kyiv, Dnipro, and Khmelnytskyi Oblast – for their complicity in the Russian operation, dubbed “Ukraine is disappearing without a trace.” These individuals, acting on directives from Russian intelligence, disseminated disinformation across social media platforms, focusing on videos featuring captured Ukrainian soldiers held in Kursk Oblast, Russia. The videos depicted these POWs urging their comrades to lay down their arms, instigate mutiny, and defy orders from the military command. This fabricated narrative aimed to sow discord within the Ukrainian ranks and erode the fighting spirit of the defense forces.

Investigations have revealed that the Russian operatives forced at least eight Ukrainian prisoners of war to participate in these staged videos. The POWs were subjected to immense pressure, including threats, coercion, and in some cases, brutal torture, to comply with the Russian demands. A makeshift studio was constructed within a detention facility in Kursk Oblast specifically for filming the propaganda material. Those who refused to cooperate faced dire consequences, enduring horrific conditions and intensified abuse at the hands of their captors. The SSU emphasized the inhumane treatment inflicted upon these POWs, highlighting the lengths to which Russian forces would go to achieve their propaganda objectives.

Further amplifying the reach of this disinformation campaign, Russian intelligence sought to involve the relatives and acquaintances of the captured Ukrainian soldiers. The SSU apprehended individuals tasked with distributing the fabricated videos among the POWs’ social circles, exploiting personal connections to maximize the psychological impact. These agents, now in custody, have confessed to their role in disseminating the videos and to receiving further instructions to sabotage Ukrainian military efforts, including setting fire to vehicles and providing targeting information for airstrikes. This multifaceted approach reveals a coordinated strategy aimed at disrupting Ukrainian defenses from within and without.

The operation highlights the Kremlin’s ongoing investment in psychological warfare, leveraging disinformation and manipulation to influence public opinion and erode Ukrainian resistance. The coerced participation of Ukrainian POWs adds a particularly disturbing dimension to this tactic, exploiting their vulnerability and turning them into unwitting instruments of Russian propaganda. The SSU’s exposure of this scheme underscores the importance of critical media literacy and the need to verify information from multiple sources, particularly in the context of an active information war. This incident further emphasizes the brutality and disregard for international law that characterizes the Russian approach to the conflict.

The Ukrainian authorities have confiscated computers, flash drives, handwritten notes, phones, and SIM cards from the apprehended collaborators, providing crucial evidence of their communication and coordination with Russian handlers. All three individuals have been formally charged under Article 114-1, Part 1 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code, which addresses obstruction of the lawful activities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations. A court has ordered their detention without bail, pending further investigation and prosecution. The ongoing investigation aims to uncover the full extent of the Russian psychological operation and bring all those responsible to justice, while simultaneously strengthening measures to counter future disinformation campaigns. The Ukrainian government remains committed to protecting its citizens from manipulation and ensuring the integrity of information during this critical time.
