Kremlin-Linked Disinformation Campaign Falsely Accuses Ukraine’s Allies of Territorial Division Plot
A sophisticated disinformation operation orchestrated by Kremlin-aligned sources is spreading false accusations that Ukraine’s allies are secretly plotting to carve up the country’s territory among themselves in the event of a peace agreement with Russia. This fabricated narrative, disseminated across social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Telegram, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter), leverages forged documents and AI-generated content to sow discord and undermine support for Ukraine.
The disinformation campaign centers around claims that a prominent Russian hacking group, Killnet, has exposed confidential French military documents revealing a clandestine plan to divide Ukraine’s territory and resources among four allies: France, the UK, Poland, and Romania. This alleged plan also involves deploying up to 50,000 peacekeeping troops. A fabricated map purporting to detail the “zones of influence” has been widely circulated as evidence of this conspiracy.
However, closer scrutiny of the map reveals glaring inconsistencies and errors that expose its fraudulent nature. Linguistic inaccuracies, such as the misspelling of Belarus in French and the omission of the French definite article “la,” strongly suggest that the map was not created by the French military. Furthermore, the map depicts Crimea as part of Russia, a position contrary to the stance of France and its Western allies, who recognize Crimea as Ukrainian territory under Russian occupation. The misspelling of former French General Thierry Burkhard’s name further reinforces the map’s illegitimacy.
Despite these clear indicators of disinformation, the fabricated map and accompanying narrative have gained traction across several Kremlin-aligned media outlets, amplifying its reach and influence. The narrative has also been repackaged into an AI-generated video mimicking a news report, adding a veneer of authenticity to the false claims. This multifaceted approach underscores the sophistication and deliberate nature of the disinformation campaign.
Open-source intelligence investigations have traced the origin of the fabricated map to a Telegram channel called Mash, known for its close ties to the Kremlin and a history of disseminating false information targeting Ukraine and its allies. Mash has previously propagated unfounded allegations, including claims that Kyiv was selling organs of deceased soldiers and vastly inflated casualty figures for the Ukrainian armed forces. These past instances of disinformation further discredit Mash’s credibility and implicate it as a key player in this latest campaign.
While efforts have been made to counter the disinformation on some platforms, such as X, where community notes have been added to flag the false claims, the misleading content continues to circulate unchecked on other platforms, including Facebook and Instagram. This highlights the challenge of combating disinformation in the rapidly evolving online landscape and the need for constant vigilance and robust fact-checking mechanisms.
The Kremlin’s persistent use of disinformation as a weapon in the information war surrounding the conflict in Ukraine underscores the need for critical media literacy and independent verification of information.
