Kyiv, Ukraine – A recent wave of disinformation, circulating primarily on social media platforms like TikTok, has falsely claimed a mass exodus of young Ukrainian men following a government decision to ease travel restrictions. The Center for Countering Disinformation, a Ukrainian government body, has debunked these claims, asserting that border crossing figures remain consistent with pre-existing trends, primarily driven by the summer travel season. Contrary to the disinformation narrative, the State Border Guard Service has reported no significant increase in outbound passenger traffic after the August 27th resolution permitting 18-22 year old men to travel abroad. On August 28th, the day after the resolution, 127,000 individuals crossed the border, a figure identical to the previous day’s count. Furthermore, entries into Ukraine continued to exceed departures, with 2,000 more individuals entering than leaving on the 28th, and a 7,000 surplus the preceding day. These figures clearly contradict the fabricated scenario of a mass exodus. The presence of 18-22 year old men at border checkpoints has remained unremarkable, further dispelling the manufactured crisis.
The Center for Countering Disinformation attributes the consistently high passenger traffic to the ongoing summer travel season. Border crossings have, expectedly, increased compared to the spring months. While weekday crossings in the spring ranged between 75,000 and 85,000, current figures show 125,000 to 135,000 crossings per weekday. Weekend crossings now reach approximately 150,000. This seasonal fluctuation in travel patterns is a normal occurrence, unrelated to the recent policy change regarding young men’s travel.
