Pakistan Bolsters Security Measures for Muharram, Cracks Down on Online Hate Speech
LAHORE/ISLAMABAD – Pakistan is implementing stringent security measures ahead of Muharram, the sacred month of mourning for Shia Muslims, with a particular focus on curbing the spread of inflammatory content and hate speech on social media platforms. Punjab Information Minister, Azma Bokhari, announced a zero-tolerance policy for online content that incites hatred, sectarianism, or violence, warning that offenders will face immediate arrest. This initiative marks a significant step in the government’s efforts to maintain peace and harmony during a period known for its sensitive religious observances.
The Punjab government is deploying a dedicated cyber security force, a first in the province’s history, to monitor social media activity in collaboration with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). This specialized unit will actively scrutinize online platforms for potentially harmful content, with swift action, including account suspensions and legal prosecution, promised against those found responsible. In addition to the online crackdown, a complete ban on drone operations has been imposed during Muharram. Anyone caught operating a drone will face immediate arrest, a measure designed to prevent unauthorized surveillance and mitigate potential security risks. At the federal level, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi chaired a high-level meeting to review the nationwide Muharram security plan.
