AI-Generated Content Sparks Trust and Misinformation Concerns Among UK Public

The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the online content landscape, raising both excitement and apprehension among consumers. A recent YouGov survey of over 2,000 UK adults reveals widespread concern about the trustworthiness of online content in general, with these anxieties extending to AI-generated material. While AI offers exciting possibilities for content creation, the public remains wary of its potential to spread misinformation and blur the lines between reality and fabrication.

The survey highlights a significant level of public concern regarding online content, with 81% of respondents expressing worry about its trustworthiness. This apprehension is further amplified when considering digitally altered content, such as photoshopped images and edited videos, with 76% expressing concern. While slightly lower than concerns about digitally altered content, a substantial 73% of UK consumers express worry about AI-generated content, compared to a mere 8% who are unconcerned. This indicates a clear public awareness of the potential implications of AI in shaping online narratives.

The survey also reveals a gender divide in perceptions of AI-generated content. Women are notably more likely than men to express concern about both AI-generated content (78% vs. 69%) and digitally altered content (80% vs. 72%). This difference may reflect varying levels of trust in online information sources or differing sensitivities to the potential manipulative power of AI-generated content.

Delving into the specific issue of misinformation, the survey reveals further nuances. While two-thirds (67%) of consumers express concern about misinformation stemming from AI-generated content, a larger proportion (75%) view digitally altered content as a significant contributor to misinformation. Interestingly, higher socioeconomic groups (ABC1s) are more likely than lower socioeconomic groups (C2DEs) to perceive both AI-generated content (70% vs. 62%) and digitally altered content (79% vs. 69%) as strong contributors to misinformation. This may reflect greater awareness within these demographics of sophisticated manipulation techniques like deepfakes, which have already demonstrated their potential to distort public perception.

One proposed solution to combat misinformation is the labeling of AI-generated content. However, public opinion on the effectiveness of this approach is divided. Half of the respondents believe that labels would be effective in curbing the spread of misinformation from AI-generated content, while 29% deem them ineffective. This mirrors the sentiment towards labeling digitally altered content, with a similar 50% believing in its potential and 29% disagreeing.

Adding complexity to the labeling debate is the significant trust deficit surrounding the labels themselves. Almost half (48%) of respondents express distrust in the accuracy of AI-generated content labels on social media, compared to just 19% who would trust them. This highlights a potential paradox: while labeling is intended to increase transparency and trust, the public may be skeptical of the labels’ reliability, thus undermining their intended purpose. The survey also reveals an age gap in trust, with young adults (16-34) more than twice as likely to trust content labeling compared to those aged 55 and over (31% vs. 12%).

Beyond expressing concern, the survey explored how individuals would react upon encountering AI-generated content labeled as such on social media. A substantial 42% indicated they wouldn’t take any immediate action, suggesting a degree of neutrality or perhaps uncertainty about how to respond. However, a significant 27% would block or unfollow the account posting the AI-generated content, indicating a potential aversion to such material. Smaller percentages expressed interest in engaging with the post (5%), seeking more AI content (2%), or sharing the post (2%), suggesting a generally cautious approach to AI-generated material.

Age demographics further influence reactions to labeled AI-generated content. Younger consumers (16-24) are more likely to engage with such posts (11% vs. 5% overall) and share them (5% vs. 2% overall). Conversely, older consumers (55+) are more likely to block or unfollow the account posting the labeled AI content (33% vs. 27% overall). This generational divide reflects differing levels of comfort with AI technology and potentially different perceptions of its role in online communication. The survey highlights the complex landscape of public opinion surrounding AI-generated content. While the technology offers new creative possibilities, concerns about misinformation and the erosion of trust remain significant. The effectiveness of labeling as a mitigation strategy is further complicated by public skepticism about the labels themselves. As AI continues to evolve and permeate the online world, understanding and addressing these public concerns will be crucial for fostering a healthy and trustworthy digital environment.
