Islamabad Police Investigate PTI Workers for Alleged Social Media Campaign to Incite Unrest
Islamabad – A joint investigation team (JIT) led by the Islamabad police chief has launched an investigation into several Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers for their alleged involvement in a coordinated social media campaign aimed at inciting unrest and spreading disinformation within Pakistan. The JIT has issued notices to prominent PTI figures, including Muhammad Arshad, Atta-ur-Rehman, Azhar Mashwani, Komal Afridi, Arusa Nadeem Shah, and M. Ali Malik, summoning them for questioning on December 13, 2024. The investigation comes amidst growing concerns over the spread of misinformation and propaganda on social media platforms and its potential impact on national stability.
The JIT’s primary objective is to uncover the motives and connections behind this alleged disinformation campaign. Investigators are meticulously examining the content shared by the accused individuals, analyzing their online activity, and tracing communication networks to determine the extent of their involvement and identify any potential collaborators. The investigation is also focused on establishing whether this campaign was a coordinated effort and if there were any external influences or funding involved. The JIT spokesperson emphasized the importance of holding those responsible for spreading disinformation accountable for their actions.
The federal government has taken a proactive stance against cybercrimes and online disinformation by establishing a specialized team under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016. This team, operating under the supervision of the Islamabad IG Police, is empowered to investigate and prosecute individuals involved in online activities that threaten national security, public order, or incite violence. The JIT’s investigation into the PTI workers falls under the purview of PECA and leverages the expertise and resources of this specialized team. Section 30 of PECA provides the legal framework for the team’s operations and ensures accountability in cases of online misconduct.
The JIT has reportedly gathered substantial evidence implicating the accused PTI workers in disseminating propaganda and inflammatory content on social media platforms. The evidence gathered so far suggests a concerted effort to spread misinformation and create instability within the country. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working diligently to identify any additional individuals or groups involved in the alleged campaign. The JIT is committed to pursuing all legal avenues and ensuring that those responsible for undermining national stability are brought to justice.
Earlier this year, the government’s formation of a high-level JIT signaled its commitment to combating online disinformation and malicious campaigns. This multi-agency team, comprising experts from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA)’s Cyber Crime and Counter-Terrorism Wing, the Islamabad police’s Investigation and Counter-Terrorism Department, reflects a collaborative approach to address the complex challenges posed by online propaganda. The JIT’s mandate includes investigating the motives behind these campaigns, identifying the perpetrators and their networks, and taking decisive legal action against them.
While the investigation follows closely on the heels of the interior ministry’s announcement of a JIT to probe the PTI’s alleged involvement in "anti-state propaganda," the official notification regarding the current investigation does not specifically name the party. However, the focus on PTI workers suggests a possible connection between the two initiatives. The government’s intensified efforts to curb online disinformation reflect a growing concern over the potential for social media platforms to be used to spread misinformation and incite unrest. The outcome of this investigation could have significant implications for the political landscape in Pakistan and the ongoing debate over the regulation of online content.
