Air India Flight AI-171 Crash: WhatsApp Message Claiming Preliminary Report is Fake News

New Delhi, June 21, 2025 – A viral WhatsApp message claiming to be a preliminary crash report of Air India Flight AI-171 has been debunked by the Press Information Bureau’s Fact Check unit (PIB Fact Check). The message, which spread rapidly across social media and messaging platforms following the June 12, 2025 crash in Ahmedabad, contained fabricated information regarding the circumstances and causes of the tragic incident.

The PIB Fact Check unit took to X (formerly Twitter) to warn the public about the misinformation, stating: "A #WhatsApp message, claiming to be a preliminary report on the crash of Air India Flight AI-171, is circulating widely. ❌This message is #Fake. ⚠️Always rely on official sources for accurate information.”

Authorities have emphasized the importance of verifying information from reliable sources, particularly during ongoing investigations. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and other relevant aviation authorities are currently conducting a comprehensive investigation into the AI-171 crash, and no official report has been released to the public.

The spread of misinformation in the aftermath of such tragedies is a recurring challenge for government agencies. False narratives can fuel panic and confusion, hindering rescue efforts and potentially interfering with the investigative process. Officials urge the public to rely solely on verified government channels and recognized news agencies for accurate updates.

Tragically, the crash of Air India Flight AI-171 underscores the vulnerability of information ecosystems to the rapid spread of misinformation. In an age of instant communication, unverified claims can easily gain traction, especially when they exploit public anxieties and the desire for quick answers. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of media literacy and critical thinking in the digital age.

As the investigation into the AI-171 crash progresses, the public is advised to exercise patience and await official pronouncements from the DGCA and other relevant authorities. Speculation and the dissemination of unsubstantiated information can impede the investigation and create unnecessary distress for those affected by the tragedy. Responsible information consumption is crucial in ensuring accurate reporting and supporting the efforts of investigators. It is paramount that the families of the victims and the public receive verified information from trustworthy sources, allowing them to navigate this difficult period with clarity and avoiding the further trauma that misinformation can inflict. The focus should remain on supporting the ongoing investigation and respecting the sensitive nature of the tragedy.
