Poland Bolsters Cybersecurity Measures Ahead of Presidential Elections Amidst Growing Concerns of Foreign Interference

Warsaw, Poland – As the Polish presidential elections draw near, scheduled for May 18th, the government is ramping up efforts to fortify its cybersecurity defenses and counter potential foreign interference. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Digital Affairs, Krzysztof Gawkowski, has confirmed ongoing dialogues with major social media platforms, including Meta Platforms Inc., Alphabet Inc., and Microsoft Corp., to establish a collaborative framework for mitigating the anticipated surge in cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns. This proactive approach comes in the wake of allegations of foreign meddling in Romania’s 2023 presidential election, which resulted in the Supreme Court’s unprecedented decision to annul the results and mandate a re-run. The Polish government is determined to prevent similar disruptions to its democratic process and maintain the integrity of the upcoming elections.

The initiative, dubbed the "election umbrella," constitutes a multi-pronged strategy designed to safeguard the electoral process from external manipulation. Gawkowski emphasized the government’s commitment to working closely with social media giants to swiftly address any escalation in malicious activities as the election date approaches. This collaboration aims to leverage the platforms’ capabilities to identify and counteract disinformation campaigns, particularly those orchestrated by so-called "troll farms," which utilize networks of fake accounts to disseminate misleading or inflammatory content. These farms can be rapidly activated in the critical period leading up to the election, posing a significant threat to a fair and transparent democratic process.

The Polish government’s concerns are not unfounded. In January 2025, authorities issued warnings about observed organized provocations and attempts to recruit individuals for disinformation dissemination. While Poland has not yet witnessed direct foreign backing of specific candidates, similar to Elon Musk’s overt support of the far-right AfD party during the German parliamentary elections, the potential for external influence remains a serious consideration. Gawkowski stressed the importance of non-interference in Poland’s internal affairs, particularly regarding manipulation of social media algorithms and illicit campaign financing. He emphasized that while expressing opinions about the elections is permissible, active interference in the process is unacceptable.

The upcoming presidential elections carry significant weight for Poland’s political landscape. Prime Minister Donald Tusk has endorsed Warsaw Mayor Rafal Tszaskowski as his preferred successor, hoping to maintain continuity in the government’s agenda after nearly a decade of nationalist rule. The stakes are high, and a smooth and secure election process is vital for ensuring a legitimate transfer of power. Gawkowski has confirmed that his ministry is maintaining consistent communication with the campaign teams of all presidential candidates, further highlighting the government’s dedication to transparency and fair play. This open communication channel further strengthens the integrity of the electoral process.

Poland’s heightened security measures underscore the growing global concern over foreign interference in democratic elections. The increasing prevalence of cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns, often amplified through social media platforms, poses a substantial challenge to maintaining free and fair elections. The Polish government’s proactive approach, including its collaborative efforts with tech companies, sets a precedent for other nations grappling with similar threats. The success of the "election umbrella" will be a crucial test case for the effectiveness of such strategies in preserving the integrity of democratic processes in the digital age.

The focus on preemptive measures and collaboration underscores the significance of protecting democratic processes from external influence. The Polish government’s efforts highlight the ongoing battle against disinformation and the need for constant vigilance in safeguarding electoral integrity. This proactive approach is essential in ensuring that the voice of the Polish people remains paramount in determining the outcome of the upcoming presidential elections. The international community will be closely watching Poland’s experience, as it provides valuable insights into the evolving challenges of securing democratic processes in an increasingly interconnected and digitally driven world.
