Pakistan’s Disinformation Campaign Amidst Escalating Tensions with India
The recent escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan, following cross-border missile and drone attacks, has witnessed a surge in disinformation campaigns originating from Pakistani social media handles. These campaigns, aimed at instilling fear and confusion among the Indian populace, have prompted the Press Information Bureau (PIB) to intensify its fact-checking efforts. The PIB has identified and debunked numerous instances of fabricated news and manipulated media, exposing the concerted effort to spread misinformation and undermine public trust.
The disinformation campaign, characterized by the rapid dissemination of fabricated videos, images, and text-based messages, exploits the anxieties surrounding the escalating conflict. The perpetrators leverage social media platforms to amplify their reach and sow discord among the Indian public. A fake letter, purportedly from the Chief of the Army Staff, General VK Narayan, was circulated online, containing fabricated information about military preparedness. Similarly, baseless claims of the Indian military using Ambala Airbase to attack Amritsar and its citizens were debunked, exposing the malicious intent behind the fabricated narrative.
