Pharmacist Receives Warning for Misusing Personal Photos on Social Media
Belfast, Northern Ireland – A local pharmacist, Matthew Nethery, has been issued a formal warning by the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland (PSNI) after admitting to creating a fake social media profile using another individual’s photographs without their consent. The incident, which occurred in 2023, involved Nethery posting false and inaccurate information about the individual, causing them significant distress. The PSNI’s Fitness to Practise (FtP) committee deemed Nethery’s actions unacceptable, though they also acknowledged his remorse and subsequent efforts to rectify the situation.
Nethery’s actions came to light after the individual targeted by the false social media profile reported the incident to the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI). He received a police caution in October 2023 for misusing the photographs and creating the deceptive profile. The PSNI investigation revealed that Nethery had fabricated details about the individual, spreading false information that caused them considerable anxiety. The motivation behind Nethery’s actions was reportedly an attempt to contact another individual using the fake profile.
The matter was then referred to the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland, the professional regulatory body for pharmacists in the region. During the FtP committee hearing on February 26, 2024, Nethery admitted to all charges brought against him. He acknowledged the inappropriateness of his actions and expressed remorse for the distress caused to the victim. The committee took into account Nethery’s full cooperation with the investigation and his acceptance of responsibility.
In an effort to demonstrate his understanding of the gravity of his actions, Nethery has since undertaken an online course focusing on responsible social media usage. He has also voluntarily deactivated all of his social media accounts. His employer provided a statement to the FtP committee vouching for his otherwise unblemished professional conduct both before and after the incident. This information contributed to the committee’s decision to issue a warning rather than impose a more severe penalty.
The FtP committee concluded that Nethery had demonstrated sufficient insight into his wrongdoing and had taken appropriate remedial steps. They also considered the likelihood of similar behavior recurring to be low. Consequently, the committee opted to issue a formal warning to Nethery regarding his conduct. This outcome reflects the seriousness of the transgression while acknowledging the mitigating factors presented.
