NMIMS Bengaluru Implements Comprehensive Social Media Policy to Foster Responsible Online Conduct

Bengaluru, India – In response to the growing concerns surrounding misinformation, cyberbullying, and irresponsible online behavior, the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) Bengaluru has taken a proactive step by introducing a comprehensive social media policy. This policy, applicable to all NMIMS campuses across India, aims to cultivate a culture of responsible digital citizenship among its students, faculty, and stakeholders. The initiative underscores the institution’s commitment to preparing its graduates for the professional world, where ethical and informed social media engagement is increasingly critical.

The policy addresses a wide spectrum of online activities, encompassing accuracy of information, respect for intellectual property rights, the enduring nature of digital content, and the potential impact of online actions on both individuals and the institution. Students are explicitly required to meticulously cite all external sources, refrain from utilizing copyrighted materials without proper authorization, and avoid creating social media accounts or posts that could be misconstrued as official NMIMS channels. Furthermore, the policy strictly prohibits the unauthorized disclosure of internal information or sharing of academic content.

NMIMS Bengaluru emphasizes a zero-tolerance approach towards online bullying and harassment. The policy mandates mindful and responsible use of university networks, upholding confidentiality, taking ownership of individual online accounts, and adhering to all applicable legal regulations. This holistic approach aims to create a safe and respectful online environment for all members of the NMIMS community.

Dr. Narayani Ramachandran, Director of NMIMS Bengaluru, highlighted the positive impact of the policy, stating that it has fostered a greater sense of accountability among students and staff. This heightened awareness of the repercussions of online actions has likely contributed to a reduction in instances of defamation, unauthorized content sharing, and the use of hostile language online. The policy ensures that all university-related posts maintain a standard of accuracy, professionalism, and respect.

To ensure effective implementation and address any instances of non-compliance, the policy establishes clear disciplinary procedures. Student-related violations will be handled by the Student Disciplinary Committee (SDC), while matters involving staff members will be overseen by a special committee appointed by the Vice Chancellor. Throughout the proceedings, confidentiality will be strictly maintained to guarantee fairness and transparency.

The NMIMS social media policy serves as a significant step towards establishing clear guidelines for responsible online behavior within an academic setting. By proactively addressing the challenges posed by social media misuse, NMIMS aims to equip its students and staff with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the digital landscape ethically and effectively, ultimately contributing to a more positive and productive online experience for all. The institution’s commitment to responsible digital citizenship serves as a model for other educational institutions grappling with similar challenges in the digital age.
