Port Moresby General Hospital Denies "No NID, No Treatment" Policy Amidst Fake News Circulation

Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea – Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH), the largest healthcare facility in Papua New Guinea, has vehemently denied implementing a policy requiring patients to present national identification (NID) cards to receive medical treatment. This clarification comes in response to a wave of false information circulating on social media platforms, causing unnecessary anxiety and confusion among the public. The hospital administration has strongly condemned the spread of this misinformation, emphasizing its potential to erode public trust in healthcare institutions.

The false claims originated from fabricated social media posts in November 2024, featuring a manipulated image resembling a "breaking news" television report. The image, easily reproducible using online tools designed to create parody news reports, falsely proclaimed that patients were being turned away from PMGH for lack of NID cards. These posts quickly gained traction, sparking public concern and prompting discussions about the practicality and ethics of such a policy, particularly given the challenges many PNG citizens face in obtaining NID cards.

PMGH CEO, Dr. Paki Molumi, addressed the issue directly, stating unequivocally that no such policy exists at the hospital. He stressed the importance of verifying information before sharing it on social media, highlighting the detrimental impact of misinformation on public trust and healthcare access. Dr. Molumi reassured the public that PMGH remains committed to providing healthcare services to all individuals, regardless of their NID status, and emphasized the hospital’s proactive measures to counter the false narrative and ensure accurate information dissemination.

The incident underscores the ongoing challenges posed by misinformation, especially in the context of vital public services like healthcare. The accessibility and rapid spread of information on social media platforms often contribute to the swift propagation of false narratives, potentially jeopardizing public health and eroding trust in essential institutions. The hospital’s prompt and decisive response serves as a model for addressing misinformation and underscores the importance of credible sources of information in combating the spread of false narratives.

The controversy also highlights the broader issues surrounding PNG’s national ID card program, launched in 2014 with the aim of providing universal identification for various services, including voting, banking, and accessing mobile phone services. While the program’s intention was to streamline access to essential services, its implementation has faced significant hurdles. Despite the program’s objectives, only an estimated quarter of the population has successfully registered for NID cards, with many encountering delays, access barriers, and administrative challenges. Allegations of mismanagement of funds further complicate the program’s efficacy and contribute to public skepticism.

This incident serves as a reminder of the critical need for responsible social media usage and the importance of verifying information before sharing it. The rapid spread of false narratives can have severe consequences, particularly when it concerns essential services like healthcare. PMGH’s decisive action in addressing the misinformation underscores the hospital’s commitment to transparency and public trust, and their efforts to counteract the damaging effects of the fabricated news reports reaffirm their dedication to serving the healthcare needs of all citizens, regardless of their NID status. The broader context of PNG’s NID program and its associated challenges further emphasizes the importance of robust fact-checking mechanisms and responsible information sharing practices.
