Nobel Laureate Prof. Yunus Urges Meta to Combat Disinformation Campaign Targeting Bangladesh

DHAKA – Bangladesh’s Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Professor Muhammad Yunus, has called upon Meta, the parent company of Facebook, to take decisive action against a concerted disinformation campaign emanating from several countries aimed at undermining the significance of the mass uprising that took place in Bangladesh between July and August. Prof. Yunus voiced his concerns during a meeting with Miranda Sissons, Meta’s Director for Human Rights Policy, at the state guest house Jamuna. He emphasized the detrimental impact of this malicious campaign, stating, "There’s a massive disinformation campaign, and we are the sufferers." Sissons assured Prof. Yunus of Meta’s commitment to upholding human rights and outlined the company’s policies designed to prevent the spread of disinformation across its platforms.

The meeting between Prof. Yunus and Sissons took place against the backdrop of growing international concern regarding the proliferation of disinformation and its potential to destabilize democracies and incite violence. The mass uprising in Bangladesh, which occurred during the specified timeframe, became a focal point for the spread of misleading narratives and outright falsehoods on social media platforms. These disinformation campaigns, originating from both within and outside the country, sought to distort the events and discredit the movement’s objectives. Prof. Yunus’s appeal to Meta underscores the urgent need for social media giants to assume greater responsibility in curbing the spread of harmful content and protecting the integrity of democratic processes.

In addition to addressing the issue of disinformation, Prof. Yunus also urged Meta to enhance the user-friendliness of its technology, particularly for young entrepreneurs. He emphasized the transformative potential of technology, stating, "Technology is a tool to make things happen. But technology doesn’t decide what we want to do with things. So, we have to reengineer it to make it perfect." He specifically highlighted the opportunities presented by Facebook, suggesting that the platform could be leveraged to empower young people and foster entrepreneurship. Prof. Yunus underscored the importance of adapting and refining technology to align with societal needs and maximize its positive impact on communities.

Prof. Yunus expressed his belief that Facebook holds immense potential for social and economic development, particularly in developing countries like Bangladesh. He envisioned a scenario where the platform could serve as a catalyst for empowering young entrepreneurs, providing them with the tools and resources needed to launch and scale their businesses.
