Southern African Journalists Unite Against the Disinformation Deluge: A Critical Training Initiative
Gaborone, Botswana – The digital age, while offering unprecedented opportunities for information sharing and democratic discourse, has also unleashed a torrent of disinformation and misinformation, threatening the very foundations of democratic societies. This infodemic, as it has been termed, has permeated all corners of the globe, with Africa, and Southern Africa in particular, facing its own unique set of challenges. Recognizing the urgency and gravity of this issue, journalist unions across Southern Africa, with the backing of UNESCO’s Regional Office for Southern Africa and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), convened a crucial "Training for Trainers" workshop in Gaborone, Botswana, from September 10-12, 2024. This workshop, focused on combating misinformation and promoting information integrity, represents a significant step towards equipping journalists with the tools and skills necessary to navigate the complex information landscape and uphold the principles of ethical, quality journalism.
The pervasive spread of disinformation and misinformation poses a multifaceted threat to the region. It erodes public trust in legitimate media sources, fuels social polarization and conflict, exacerbates existing inequalities, and undermines democratic processes by manipulating public opinion and hindering informed decision-making.
