Srebrenica Survivor Confronts Resurgent Genocide Denial 30 Years On

Thirty years ago, Nedzad Avdic, a 17-year-old Bosnian Muslim, stood on the precipice of death. Captured by Bosnian Serb forces during the fall of Srebrenica, he was lined up for execution alongside other men and boys. He vividly recalls the shots, the searing pain, and the ensuing darkness. Miraculously, he survived, escaping the killing field with another wounded prisoner. Avdic’s testimony, shared with the German parliament, serves as a chilling reminder of the Srebrenica genocide, a horrific event now facing a renewed wave of denial.

The systematic massacre of over 7,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys in July 1995, after the fall of the UN-designated “safe area” of Srebrenica, has been unequivocally recognized as genocide by two international courts. Yet, despite this legal and historical consensus, denial of the genocide is gaining traction, particularly within far-right political circles. In the German parliament, members of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party have downplayed the killings, arguing they do not constitute genocide. They have also invoked conspiracy theories about “birth jihad,” linking the Srebrenica massacre to unrelated anxieties about Muslim immigrants in Germany.

This resurgence of denialism is not confined to Germany. In Bosnia, Milorad Dodik, a prominent Serb leader, has dismissed the meticulously documented identification of nearly 7,000 victims – a monumental effort involving the largest DNA identification project in history – as a fabricated hoax. He has also propagated conspiracy theories about the nature of the Srebrenica tragedy, further fueling denial and undermining the painstaking work of establishing the truth.

The spread of disinformation and war crime denial online poses a significant challenge. Experts warn that this trend is becoming increasingly pervasive, encompassing not only past atrocities like the Holocaust, the Rwandan genocide, and the Srebrenica massacre but also ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, Israel, and Gaza. The internet has become a breeding ground for the distortion and denial of historical facts, eroding public understanding and creating a climate where such horrors could be repeated.

The monetization of war crime denial online adds a disturbing dimension to this phenomenon. At a conference commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre, directors of prominent genocide memorials, including those from Rwanda and Auschwitz-Birkenau, highlighted the financial incentives driving some purveyors of denial. The sheer volume of online traffic generated by this content has made it a profitable enterprise, raising concerns that financial gain, rather than ideology, is motivating the spread of these harmful narratives.

Despite the escalating denial and the painful memories, Avdic remains committed to sharing his story. He has returned to Srebrenica, determined to rebuild his life and raise his family in the town where he witnessed such unimaginable horror. He sees his testimony as a vital act of resistance against the rising tide of denialism. He recognizes the emotional toll of reliving these traumatic events but feels a profound responsibility to speak for those who perished beside him. His wife, Elvisa, also a survivor of the Srebrenica genocide, shares his commitment to remembering and honoring the victims.

The Ghosts of Srebrenica: A Survivor’s Return and the Fight Against Forgetting

Avdic’s return to Srebrenica in 2007, after years of living under a pseudonym and testifying at war crimes trials, was a testament to his resilience and his deep connection to his hometown. He found solace in returning to the place where he grew up, despite the painful memories it held. The nightmares that had haunted him for years lessened in frequency, a testament to the healing power of returning to his roots.

The desire to speak publicly about his experience intensified in 2014, during a visit to the execution site with mothers of the victims. He felt a compelling urge to share his story, a force stronger than himself propelling him to bear witness. Since then, he has become a tireless advocate for remembrance, delivering speeches in numerous countries and urging the protection of civilians in conflict zones around the world.

Life Amidst the Shadows: Reconciliation and the Perils of Denial

Avdic and Elvisa have built a life together in Srebrenica, raising their three daughters in a community still grappling with the legacy of the genocide. While Serbs and Muslims coexist in the town, the war remains a sensitive topic, rarely discussed openly. This fragile peace is constantly threatened by the persistent undercurrent of denial and the occasional provocations by Serb nationalists.

A Continuing Struggle: The Fight for Truth and Justice in a Digital Age

The spread of denialism online presents a new and daunting challenge. Avdic is often recognized and taunted by Serb nationalists in neighboring towns, a stark reminder of the ongoing tensions and the persistent threat of violence. While he remains unafraid, he acknowledges the dangers he faces as a witness to the genocide.

The future of Srebrenica, and the memory of the victims, remains uncertain. The slow exodus of Muslims from the town, driven by economic hardship and safety concerns, raises fears about the long-term viability of the community. Elvisa worries about her children’s future in this environment, acutely aware of the precariousness of the peace.

Despite the challenges, Avdic and Elvisa remain committed to raising their family in Srebrenica. They believe it is their duty to stay and keep the memory of the victims alive. Avdic’s unwavering determination to speak the truth, even in the face of hostility and denial, serves as a powerful testament to the enduring human spirit and the importance of remembering the lessons of the past. He vows to continue his fight for truth and justice, ensuring that the voices of those silenced in Srebrenica will never be forgotten.
