Marcos Jr. Urges Government Communicators to Combat Disinformation, Championing Truth in the Digital Age

PASAY CITY – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. delivered a powerful call to action against the rising tide of fake news, disinformation, and misinformation, urging government communicators to become staunch defenders of truth in the digital sphere. Speaking at the inaugural "Parangal: Gawad ng Kahusayan sa Komunikasyong Pampubliko" on Monday night, the President warned that silence in the face of these threats amounts to complicity, emphasizing the critical role of accurate information in safeguarding democracy and fostering a well-informed citizenry. He underscored the insidious nature of disinformation, characterizing it not merely as a nuisance but as a "weapon" employed to distort reality, sow fear, and undermine democratic processes.

The President acknowledged the rapid proliferation of falsehoods in the digital landscape, highlighting how social media platforms, while offering valuable avenues for communication, can also become breeding grounds for manipulated narratives and divisive content. He stressed the urgent need for leadership to actively counter these forces, advocating for a proactive approach that involves vigilantly defending truth, resolutely exposing lies, and equipping the public with the critical thinking skills necessary to navigate the often-confusing online environment. In a world increasingly saturated with information, the ability to discern fact from fiction is paramount, and the President emphasized the government’s responsibility to empower citizens with this crucial skill.

Furthermore, President Marcos Jr. emphasized that effective governance transcends the mere exercise of authority. He argued that true leadership must cultivate genuine connection with the people, ensuring that government policies and initiatives resonate with the lived experiences of Filipinos. He acknowledged the vital role played by the media, civil society organizations, and the private sector as "stewards of democracy and champions of accountability." These entities, he noted, contribute significantly to shaping the national narrative, challenging complacency, and demanding greater responsibility from public officials.

The "Parangal" awards ceremony, organized by the Presidential Communications Office, served as a platform to recognize outstanding communication campaigns and strategies implemented by government agencies and local government units. The President lauded the awardees for their commitment to information integrity, highlighting their efforts to combat fake news and promote accurate information. He presented the awards not merely as accolades for past achievements but as a benchmark for future endeavors, setting a high standard for public communication and emphasizing the importance of transparency and public engagement.

Among the distinguished recipients of the awards were Social Welfare Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao, honored as the Outstanding Public Communicator; the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System Regulatory Office, recognized for its impactful Conservation and Desludging Awareness Social Media Campaigns; and the Department of Budget and Management, celebrated as a champion of information integrity. These individuals and organizations exemplify the dedication and innovation required to effectively communicate with the public, particularly in the face of disinformation challenges.

The President’s message resonated deeply with the audience, underscoring the vital role of communication in a healthy democracy. He emphasized that effective communication is not merely about disseminating information but about fostering genuine connection with the public, building trust, and ensuring that government actions are understood and supported by the people they serve. The "Parangal" awards not only celebrated past successes but also served as a call to action, inspiring government communicators to continue upholding the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and public engagement in the digital age. He concluded by emphasizing that true leadership endures not through words alone but through the clarity and conviction that give those words meaning and impact.
