Poland Braces for Presidential Election Amidst Onslaught of Russian Disinformation Campaign

Warsaw, Poland – As Poland gears up for a crucial presidential election, the country finds itself grappling with a sophisticated and pervasive disinformation campaign orchestrated by Russia. This covert operation, dubbed "Doppelganger" by Ukrainian intelligence, leverages meticulously crafted fake websites and social media accounts masquerading as legitimate Western news outlets to disseminate fabricated stories and manipulative narratives aimed at swaying public opinion and undermining the democratic process. The campaign represents a significant escalation in Russia’s ongoing hybrid warfare tactics targeting European Union and NATO member states.

The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU) has identified Doppelganger as one of Russia’s most extensive and long-running disinformation campaigns to date. The operation’s primary objective is to sow discord and destabilize Poland, a staunch supporter of Ukraine and a key player in the regional security architecture. By disseminating fabricated news reports and manipulative content through seemingly credible online platforms, the Kremlin seeks to exploit existing societal divisions and erode trust in established institutions. The insidious nature of the campaign lies in its ability to blur the lines between fact and fiction, making it increasingly challenging for citizens to discern credible information from carefully crafted propaganda.

The disinformation campaign has intensified in the lead-up to the Polish presidential election, with a particular focus on influencing voter perceptions and manipulating electoral outcomes. Since March 2025, Russian operatives have flooded social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter), with a barrage of false and manipulative messages. These messages are often amplified and disseminated through networks of bot accounts and fake profiles designed to mimic legitimate voters, creating an illusion of widespread public sentiment. The orchestrated dissemination of these narratives aims to manipulate public discourse, sow confusion, and ultimately influence the electoral outcome.

The primary themes propagated by the Russian disinformation campaign revolve around undermining Poland’s unwavering support for Ukraine, advocating for the country’s withdrawal from the European Union, and discrediting the policies of the opposition leader, Donald Tusk. These narratives are strategically chosen to exploit existing political fault lines and amplify anxieties within Polish society. By portraying Ukraine as a source of instability and chaos in Polish politics, the Kremlin seeks to erode public support for Ukraine and weaken the transatlantic alliance. Simultaneously, by promoting anti-EU sentiments and criticizing the opposition, the disinformation campaign aims to destabilize the political landscape and create further divisions within Polish society.

The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine has cautioned that this disinformation campaign represents a broader strategy by Moscow to exert hybrid pressure on EU and NATO members, ultimately aiming to weaken their internal unity and undermine their collective security posture. By exploiting the openness and interconnectedness of democratic societies, Russia seeks to manipulate public opinion, amplify societal divisions, and erode trust in democratic institutions. This coordinated effort highlights the growing threat posed by disinformation operations in the digital age and underscores the urgent need for robust countermeasures to protect the integrity of democratic processes.

As Poland heads to the polls, the pervasive nature of the Russian disinformation campaign poses a significant challenge to the integrity of the electoral process. The ability of malicious actors to manipulate online information and disseminate fabricated narratives at scale underscores the vulnerability of democratic societies to foreign interference. Combating this threat requires a multi-pronged approach involving increased media literacy, robust fact-checking initiatives, enhanced cybersecurity measures, and international cooperation to identify and expose the perpetrators of disinformation campaigns. The outcome of the Polish election will not only determine the country’s future trajectory but also serve as a critical test of the resilience of democratic institutions in the face of increasingly sophisticated information warfare tactics.
