Ukraine Accuses Russia of Reviving Cold War Disinformation Tactic in Middle East
Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukrainian defense intelligence has uncovered a sophisticated Russian disinformation operation aimed at discrediting Ukraine and sowing discord in the Middle East. The operation centers around the mythical substance “red mercury,” a Cold War-era fabrication resurrected by Russian agents to falsely implicate Ukraine in nuclear proliferation activities.
According to a statement released by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine (HUR), Russian operatives are peddling a so-called “black box” containing two capsules labeled with markings suggestive of plutonium and mercury on Syria’s illicit arms market. The capsules, accompanied by ten vials allegedly containing “toxic gases,” are presented as evidence of Ukraine’s illicit trafficking of nuclear materials.
However, Ukrainian intelligence asserts that the entire scheme is a fabricated narrative designed to undermine Ukraine’s international standing. The “toxic gases” are reportedly obsolete chemical reconnaissance reagents from the Soviet era, while the “red mercury” claim is a recycled disinformation tactic dating back to the 1980s and 1990s. During the Cold War, Soviet intelligence agencies propagated the myth of “red mercury” as a crucial ingredient for nuclear and radiological weapons to mislead foreign intelligence agencies.
The current operation appears to be an attempt to link the alleged sale of these materials to “corrupt officials in Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense,” painting a picture of Ukraine’s involvement in the development of makeshift nuclear weapons. This narrative, according to Ukrainian officials, is a blatant falsehood and part of Russia’s wider strategy to destabilize the region and erode international support for Ukraine.
Andriy Yusov, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence, characterized Russia’s actions as a continuation of Soviet-era disinformation tactics. These narratives, he stated, are intended to breed mistrust, fuel conspiracy theories, and create instability, particularly in regions like Syria where Russia holds significant strategic interests. The revival of the “red mercury” myth demonstrates a calculated effort to exploit existing tensions and sow further discord within the region.
Ukrainian intelligence services maintain they are actively working to counter these hybrid threats.
