Unraveling the AI-Powered Web of Influence: A $7.5 Million Quest to Understand Online Misinformation and Radicalization

The advent of artificial intelligence (AI) adds another layer of complexity, potentially amplifying the reach and impact of these harmful narratives. Recognizing the urgency of this issue, the U.S. Department of Defense has awarded a $7.5 million grant to a multi-institutional team led by Indiana University researchers. This five-year project aims to delve into the intricate interplay between AI, social media, and online misinformation, seeking to understand how AI can be exploited to manipulate public opinion and potentially counter such threats.

The research team, comprising experts in informatics, psychology, communications, folklore, and other related fields, will focus on the concept of "resonance" – the phenomenon where messages that align with pre-existing beliefs, biases, and cultural norms exert a stronger influence on individuals. This resonates with the understanding that people are more receptive to information that confirms their existing worldview, regardless of its factual accuracy. The project’s core objective is to create a holistic, dynamic model of multi-level belief resonance, moving beyond simplistic models that solely rely on factors like political affiliation. This advanced model will incorporate a complex network of interacting beliefs and concepts, intertwined with social contagion theory, to simulate the intricate dynamics of opinion formation. Collaborators from Boston University, Stanford University, and the University of California, Berkeley, further enrich the project with their specialized knowledge in media, psychology, and computational folklore, respectively. This interdisciplinary approach reflects the complex and multifaceted nature of the challenge at hand. The project also provides valuable training opportunities for a number of Ph.D. and undergraduate students at IU, nurturing the next generation of researchers in this critical field.

The study’s ultimate aim is to unravel the complex web of influences that shape online opinions, providing a deeper understanding of how AI can be utilized to both spread and combat misinformation.
