India Blocks TRT World’s X Account Amidst Rising Tensions with Pakistan
New Delhi took decisive action on Wednesday, blocking the official X account of Turkish state broadcaster TRT World. This move comes in the wake of forensic analyses revealing the use of Turkish-manufactured drones by Pakistan in recent airspace violations against India. These intrusions, swiftly countered by Indian air defense systems, underscore the escalating tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. This action against TRT World follows similar measures taken against Chinese state-run media outlets, Global Times and Xinhua, for disseminating what Indian authorities deemed "unverified and misleading information" regarding the Indian military.
The account suspension notice displayed on TRT World’s X feed states: "Account withheld. @trtworld has been withheld in India in response to a legal demand." This indicates that the Indian government formally requested the platform to take action against the broadcaster. The move comes amidst accusations that TRT World has been spreading disinformation and false narratives related to India’s recent counterterrorism operations against militant groups operating within Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
India’s Operation Sindoor, executed on May 6 and 7, targeted nine alleged terrorist launchpads. This operation was launched in retaliation for a deadly attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, which claimed the lives of 26 individuals and was attributed to Pakistan-backed militants. The subsequent airspace incursions by Pakistan, involving hundreds of drones, are viewed by India as a provocative act and a potential attempt to gather intelligence and assess Indian air defense capabilities.
Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, providing details on the airspace violations, highlighted the scale and intent of the Pakistani operations. She stated that between 300 and 400 drones were deployed in attempted intrusions across 36 locations along the western border. Indian forces successfully neutralized a significant number of these drones using both kinetic and non-kinetic methods. Preliminary forensic investigations of the downed drones strongly suggest that they were Turkish-made Asisguard Songar drones.
