Filipino Vloggers Spreading Chinese Disinformation on West Philippine Sea Condemned as Traitors

Manila, Philippines – A prominent House leader has launched a scathing attack on Filipino vloggers who propagate Chinese disinformation regarding the West Philippine Sea, labeling them as traitors who undermine national sovereignty and betray their own countrymen. Zia Alonto Adiong, chair of the House Ad Hoc Committee on Marawi Rehabilitation and Victims Compensation, vehemently denounced the spread of false narratives that echo Beijing’s claims over Philippine territory, emphasizing that this goes beyond mere misinformation and constitutes a grave act of treason. He asserted that these individuals, through their online platforms, are actively dismantling the nation’s sovereignty with every post that bolsters China’s fabricated narrative.

Adiong’s condemnation comes amid growing concern over the proliferation of pro-China propaganda on social media, particularly through vlogs and other online content. He expressed dismay that fellow Filipinos are actively participating in this disinformation campaign, seemingly oblivious to the real-world consequences of China’s aggressive actions in the disputed waters. He highlighted the plight of Filipino fishermen who face constant harassment and intimidation from Chinese vessels, emphasizing that these are tangible manifestations of the very narrative these vloggers are promoting. The congressman stressed that the issue transcends territorial disputes and directly impacts the livelihood and safety of vulnerable communities reliant on the West Philippine Sea.

The congressman further underscored the insidious nature of this disinformation campaign, arguing that it erodes the very foundation of national identity and loyalty. He questioned the patriotism of those who prioritize foreign interests over the well-being of their own country and people, asserting that such betrayal renders them unworthy of being called Filipinos. Adiong called for accountability and urged authorities to take decisive action against these individuals who, he argued, are actively aiding a foreign power in its encroachment on Philippine sovereignty. He stressed the urgent need to counter this disinformation campaign and protect the nation’s interests from both external threats and internal collaborators.

Adiong clarified that his criticism is not aimed at stifling freedom of expression or legitimate debate on the West Philippine Sea issue. He emphasized that individuals are free to express their opinions, even if they differ from the official government stance. However, he drew a clear distinction between expressing dissenting views and actively promoting false narratives that directly contradict the Philippines’ established territorial claims and undermine its national security. The latter, he argued, constitutes a clear and present danger that must be addressed decisively.

The congressman’s condemnation highlights the growing tension between freedom of expression and national security in the age of social media. While the internet has democratized access to information and provided platforms for diverse voices, it has also become a breeding ground for disinformation and propaganda. The case of the pro-China vloggers exemplifies the challenges faced by governments worldwide in grappling with the spread of false narratives that can undermine national unity and security.

The issue of disinformation surrounding the West Philippine Sea gained further prominence during a recent House Tri-Committee hearing where representatives from Meta, the parent company of Facebook, informed lawmakers about actions taken against a specific instance of false reporting. The hearing focused on the case of blogger Mark Lopez, who falsely claimed that the Philippines had used water cannons against the China Coast Guard. This claim was subsequently debunked by VERA Files, a Meta-partnered fact-checking organization, and a correction was posted. Lopez is among four vloggers cited for contempt and ordered detained for 10 days by the House of Representatives. This incident underscores the challenges of combating online disinformation and highlights the role of social media platforms in addressing the spread of false narratives.
