Global Faith in Innovation’s Potential Tempered by Misinformation and Rapid Technological Change: Philip Morris International Survey
A new multinational survey commissioned by Philip Morris International (PMI) reveals a widespread belief in the power of innovation to tackle critical global challenges, yet this optimism is tempered by growing concerns about misinformation, the rapid pace of technological advancement, and the need for stronger government regulation. The survey, conducted by Povaddo across ten countries, paints a picture of both excitement and apprehension surrounding innovation’s potential impact on various aspects of life, from healthcare to smoking cessation.
The survey’s findings highlight a strong public endorsement of innovation’s potential, with 76% of respondents expressing enthusiasm for the opportunities presented by technology. A significant majority believe innovation can drive progress in key areas, with 71% confident in its ability to enable vaccine development and 62% optimistic about its role in ensuring affordable healthcare. However, opinions diverge on more contentious issues, such as the capacity of innovation to reduce smoking rates, with only 49% of respondents expressing confidence in this area. This divide underscores the complexities of public perception and the influence of existing biases and beliefs.
A major challenge identified by the survey is the pervasive issue of misinformation, cited by a staggering 80% of respondents as a significant barrier to progress. This widespread concern highlights the urgent need for reliable sources of information and effective strategies to combat the spread of false or misleading information. Adding to the unease is the rapid pace of technological change, with 64% of respondents expressing worry about society’s ability to adapt to these advancements. These anxieties underscore the importance of proactive measures to ensure a smooth transition and equitable access to the benefits of innovation.
Citizens are calling for decisive government action to navigate these complex challenges. An overwhelming 90% of respondents emphasize the vital role of governments in ensuring public access to accurate information and establishing clear regulatory frameworks. This demand for transparency and oversight reflects a growing awareness of the potential pitfalls of unchecked technological advancement and the need for responsible governance. Furthermore, 87% advocate for government intervention to combat misinformation, and 83% support collaborative efforts between the public and private sectors to foster innovation responsibly.
PMI, traditionally known for its tobacco products, is undergoing a transformation, investing heavily in smoke-free alternatives and expanding into wellness and healthcare. The company frames the survey results within the context of its own efforts to innovate and address public health concerns related to smoking. Jacek Olczak, CEO of PMI, points to the growing body of evidence supporting smoke-free alternatives and cites examples like Sweden and Japan, where the adoption of these products has coincided with declining smoking rates. He argues that resistance to such innovations, often fueled by misinformation, hinders progress in reducing the harm caused by traditional cigarettes.
The survey results and accompanying white paper, titled "Innovation Under Pressure: Navigating Complexity to Drive Change," underscore the need for a balanced and informed approach to innovation. PMI calls for open dialogue, grounded in scientific evidence, and collaboration between governments, public health authorities, and civil society to unlock the full potential of innovation while mitigating its risks. The company’s message emphasizes the importance of not letting outdated assumptions and misinformation stifle progress in addressing critical global issues, from healthcare and sustainability to reducing the harm caused by smoking.
